Tanzania Attraction Tours by Budget Tier
Travel advisory: Costs are only half of the planning. The US government advises reconsidering travel to Tanzania, and the UK government advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the Cabo Delgado border with Mozambique. Tanzania’s headline attractions span a price range from nothing to well over USD 500, and the sensible way to choose is by how much each one costs. Tours are listed below from cheapest to dearest.
Free or nearly free
Walking Stone Town’s alleys to look at carved Swahili and Indian doors costs nothing, and neither does watching the Kilimanjaro summit from Moshi on a clear morning. The Tanzanite Experience museum in Arusha is reported free because it is a retail venue, with a tour of about an hour. Check opening times on the museum site . The Forodhani waterfront is a good place for a late snack, with Zanzibar pizza reported at about TZS 4,000 to 8,000.
Under USD 100
- Spice farm tour, Zanzibar: about USD 10 to 15 per person to taste cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and nutmeg.
- Marangu foothills walk: about USD 15 through Chagga banana and coffee groves.
- Prison Island: USD 30 to 50 per person, with a short dhow ride from Stone Town and giant Aldabra tortoises to feed.
- Materuni waterfall and coffee workshop: USD 40 to 65 per person, including an 80 m cascade and a roasting session.
Mid-range: park entry and an extra
Ngorongoro Conservation Area charges about USD 70.80 per adult, USD 23.60 for children aged 5 to 15, and nothing under 5, according to the NCAA tariff . Olduvai Gorge sits inside the area, so the entry applies there too, with a separate museum fee. Splurge: crater floor and balloons
The crater descent is a USD 295 service fee per vehicle, not per person, so sharing a Land Cruiser with four other people cuts the cost. The floor holds the Lerai fever tree forest, Lake Magadi and the hippo pool, and black rhinos are the prize sighting. A vehicle permit applies on top, and its price depends on weight. A shared Serengeti sunrise balloon flight was listed at USD 599 per person in 2026, excluding park fees.
Booking and payment tips
Park gates accept cards or e-payment only, so most visitors prepay through an operator. Compare half-day and full-day offers on Viator and then ask what the price includes. Check that the quote lists park fees, the crater fee and lunch separately.
The Serengeti is about 8 to 9 hours by road from Arusha, so it cannot be bolted onto a day tour. Plan it with multi-day trips and keep the free tier for rest days. Entry needs an e-visa and, since 1 October 2026, mandatory inbound insurance, reported at around USD 44.
Verdict: the USD 15 to 65 tier offers the best return, and the crater floor is the one big spend worth making.
