Tanzania Multi-Day Trips: First or Return
Travel advisory: Long itineraries cross more of the map, so check the latest notices. The US currently advises reconsidering travel to Tanzania, and the UK advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado border. First visits to Tanzania usually share a pattern, and return visits usually break it. A first trip wants the famous circuit, while a second trip hunts for quiet, water or altitude. Choose by which visit this is.
First trip: the northern circuit
The loop runs Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, and it works in 3 to 7 days. Budget three-day packages are reported at USD 600 to 1,200 per person, though the Serengeti and Ngorongoro legs carry park fees that climb well above that per day. Serengeti peak entry is USD 82.60 per adult per 24 hours, and Ngorongoro is about USD 70.80 plus a USD 295 crater fee per vehicle. Gates take cards or e-payment only. Five days is the comfortable minimum for the Serengeti, because the road from Arusha to Seronera takes about 8 to 9 hours. A seven-day plan adds slower mornings, and the seven-day itinerary shows one way to split the nights.
Second trip: Nyerere and the south
Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) offers boat and walking safaris, which the northern parks do not. It is best from late June to November, and many lodges close in April and May. Scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam take under an hour with Coastal Aviation, Auric Air and others, or the drive is about five hours via Mikumi. Return trip: the mountain
Kilimanjaro needs a registered operator and a licensed guide, and a solo attempt is not allowed. It is not a one- or two-day climb. Lemosho in 7 to 8 days and the Northern Circuit in 9 days give better summit odds than shorter routes. Park fees alone are about USD 880 for a six-day Machame and about USD 1,022 for seven days, including VAT.
Beach finish: Zanzibar or Mafia
Add 3 to 5 days at the coast after the bush. Zanzibar is a short flight or ferry away, and the Zanzibar tourism board has visitor details. Mafia Island suits divers between October and March, when whale shark sightings are possible but never promised.
Entry and paperwork
Get an e-visa through the immigration portal . Inbound insurance became mandatory on 1 October 2026, reported at around USD 44, and a single policy covers the mainland and Zanzibar. Malaria is present below about 1,800 m.
