Munich Family Days: 2 Hours to Full Day
Children rarely care about opening hours, but parents do, and the best Munich family days start with the time you actually have. Here are stops sorted by length, from a quick outing to a full day.
Two hours: palace canal and car showroom
Nymphenburg’s Grand Canal has a Venetian gondola that runs daily until the end of October, weather permitting. The park is free and 200 hectares in size, with room to run. Prices for the ride are on munich.travel . BMW Welt is also free to enter, so children can look at the cars without a ticket. At 11:00 and 12:00 the Glockenspiel in the Rathaus tower puts on a show, and the tower lift costs €7 for adults and €3.50 for children.
Half a day: science or animals
The Deutsches Museum is open daily 9:00 to 17:00. Adults pay €16, children 6 to 17 pay €9, a family ticket is €33 and under-6s are free. The Kinderreich is aimed at ages 3 to 8, so younger children get a space of their own. See deutsches-museum.de before you go.
Tierpark Hellabrunn is open 9:00 to 18:00 daily until 24 October and 9:00 to 17:00 from 25 October. Admission changed on 1 October 2026 to €23 for adults and €9 for children aged 4 to 14, so confirm on hellabrunn.de before you buy. The animals are grouped by continent, which makes a good map for children.
Full day: film sets
Bavaria Filmstadt in Geiselgasteig sits in its main season from 19 March to 6 November 2026, opening 9:00 to 18:00. Children can ride Falkor from The NeverEnding Story and look inside the submarine from Das Boot. Ticket prices are on the studio’s own site, and family tours on GetYourGuide are another way in.
Older children
The BMW Museum costs €17, €9 reduced or €38 for a family, and it is open Tuesday to Sunday. The plant tour (€24, €20 reduced) takes children aged 6 and over with an adult, runs on weekdays only and bans photography.
Moving the family
Children aged 6 to 14 ride free on an adult’s €10.10 Single-Tageskarte, and a separate Kindertageskarte is €3.80. A single in Zone M is €4.20. Fares are listed on mvv-muenchen.de . At the Eisbach, keep children on the bank: the wave is for experienced surfers, and nobody should enter the water. For the next Oktoberfest (18 September to 3 October 2027), strollers are banned all day on Saturdays and on 3 October, and from 18:00 on other days.
If you have more than a day, look at the list of day trips or the three-day itinerary .
Tip: pair a free two-hour stop with one paid half day, and give the second afternoon to the lawns of the Englischer Garten.
