Tanzania Family Trips by Length of Stay

Children change the maths of a Tanzania trip: long drives feel longer, lodges set age floors, and sunburn arrives early. The number of nights you have is the best way to decide what to include.
A long weekend of 3 days
Stay on the northern circuit and pick one park. Tarangire has elephants along the river and baobab trees, and it is about two hours from Arusha. Under-5s enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area free, and ages 5 to 15 pay USD 23.60 according to the NCAA tariff . Park children’s rates elsewhere are reported at 20 to 50 percent of the adult fee. Many lodges take children on game drives from about age 6, so ask each one directly.
One week: safari then sea
Seven days allows three days in the north and four on Zanzibar. A village outing at Mto wa Mbu near Lake Manyara takes about two hours, with a banana plantation, a market and Makonde carvers. Then fly or take the ferry to Zanzibar, where Prison Island’s tortoises are a short boat ride from Stone Town. Jozani Chwaka Bay has red colobus monkeys and a boardwalk, and the Butterfly Centre on its edge runs a tour of 30 to 40 minutes. Ten days or more
A longer stay can fit a night in the Serengeti, which is about 8 to 9 hours by road from Arusha to Seronera, so build in a rest day on either side. Balloon flights accept children from 7, with a shared flight listed at USD 599 per person in 2026 and park fees extra. Health and packing for every length
- Malaria is present below about 1,800 m, so talk to a doctor about tablets for each child.
- A yellow fever certificate is needed only when arriving from a risk country such as Kenya or Uganda.
- Mandatory inbound insurance is reported at about USD 44 per adult and half price for ages 3 to 17.
- Plastic carrier bags are banned, so bring cloth bags. Zip-lock bags for toiletries are allowed.
- On Zanzibar, cover shoulders and knees away from the beach and resort.
Parks charge in US dollars and take cards or e-payment only, so prepay through an operator.
