Tanzania Day Trips by Travel Time
Travel advisory: Check two official notices first. The US advises reconsidering travel to Tanzania. The UK advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the Mozambique border at Cabo Delgado, a long way from the places below. A day trip works when the driving takes less than a quarter of the day. Measure outings by travel time, and Tanzania sorts neatly into short hops, two-hour drives and journeys that need a night.
Under an hour by boat or road
From Stone Town, Prison Island (Changuu) is about 30 minutes by dhow, with Aldabra tortoises that can be over a century old and a sandbank nearby for snorkelling. Tours run about USD 30 to 50 per person. Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is about 45 minutes south-east by road, where red colobus monkeys leap through the canopy and a boardwalk crosses the mangroves. About 75 minutes: Chemka springs
The Chemka (Kikuletwa) warm springs lie roughly an hour and a quarter from Moshi or Arusha. The water is clear and turquoise under fig trees, with rope swings over the pool. Bring swimwear and a towel.
About two hours: Tarangire and Manyara
Tarangire is about two hours south-west of Arusha. It is known for baobabs and for elephant herds along the river. Lake Manyara is about two hours west, with groundwater forest, baboons, flamingos and its famous tree-climbing lions. Peak-season entry for both is about USD 59 per adult, lower in the low season. Coffee and waterfalls near Moshi
Materuni’s 80 m waterfall and a Chagga coffee workshop fit a half day for roughly USD 40 to 65. The route climbs through banana terraces, and the coffee is pounded, roasted and brewed in a village setting.
Not a day trip
The Serengeti takes about 8 to 9 hours by road from Arusha to Seronera, with gravel after the Ngorongoro gate. A scheduled bush flight shortens the journey, but a single day there still wastes the airfare. Mount Kilimanjaro is a climb of many days with a registered operator and a guide, so a day in the foothills is as far as a day trip goes.
Day trip checklist
- Carry some TZS for markets and snacks, and bring recent, undamaged USD notes for tips.
- Leave plastic carrier bags at home, since they are banned.
- Dress modestly in Stone Town, with shoulders and knees covered.
- Use sun cover and repellent, as malaria is present below about 1,800 m.
- Stay seated and quiet in open vehicles.
