Kenya Day Trips Ranked by Drive Time
Kenya’s day trips sort themselves by the clock. A lion with city towers behind it is 20 minutes from downtown Nairobi, a volcano rim is about 1.5 hours out, and the famous reserves are too far for one day.
20 minutes: Nairobi National Park
Non-resident adults pay US$80 and children US$40, prepaid on eCitizen . Lions, rhinos and giraffes graze within sight of the skyline. A private 4x4 with a guide typically runs US$150 to US$250 per vehicle for the day. Pair the park with the 11:00 to 12:00 elephant hour at the Sheldrick Trust, booked ahead, and an afternoon at the Giraffe Centre, KES 1,500 for adults.
About 1.5 hours: Mount Longonot and Sagana
Longonot is a dormant volcano north-west of Nairobi. The steep trail to the 2,776 m crater rim is 3.1 km, and the loop around the rim is about 7.2 km, passing steam vents. Go early, carry water and wear shoes with grip. Sagana, roughly 1.5 hours north, is the base for Tana River rafting through Class III to V rapids, so ask any operator about water levels and minimum ages.
About 2 hours: Naivasha
Lake Naivasha sits in the Rift Valley, where hippo pods are the draw. A one-hour motor boat ride costs about KES 2,500 to 4,000 per person. Crescent Island is a game sanctuary with no predators, so you can walk among giraffes and wildebeest. Hell’s Gate National Park is the other Rift Valley option, at US$50 for non-resident adults, and cycling is the way to see it, with bike rental about KES 1,000. You can compare Naivasha boat and bike trips if you want a driver included. Leave Nairobi by 07:00.
By boat from Diani: Wasini Island
On the coast, a motorised dhow heads into Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park for reef snorkelling and, often, bottlenose dolphins, with a Swahili seafood lunch on Wasini Island. Marine park fees are about US$25, and operators usually include them, so ask when you book. Kenya Wildlife Service tariffs are listed at kws.go.ke .
Eleven hours for nothing: the Mara
The Maasai Mara is 225 to 260 km from Nairobi, 5 to 6 hours each way, so a same-day return leaves almost no game-drive time. Allow 2 to 3 nights, as set out on the multi-day trips page .
Verdict
If you have one day, make it Nairobi National Park. If you have two, add Naivasha.
