Tanzania Activities by Month and Season
Travel advisory: Before you lock in dates, read the official pages. Washington advises reconsidering travel to Tanzania, and London advises against all but essential travel in the 20 km belt beside Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. The wildebeest never stop walking, so the best month to visit Tanzania depends on which part of the Serengeti you want to stand in. Season shapes almost everything else too: park prices, road conditions, lodge openings and sea visibility.
January to March: calving on the southern plains
The herds gather on the Ndutu plains in the south, and calving brings predators close to the tracks. The Serengeti peak rate is USD 82.60 per adult for each 24 hours, and the low-season rate begins around mid-March, so late March can cost less than February. This is also the time for the Kilimanjaro Marathon , set for 7 February 2027, and for the Sauti za Busara music festival in Stone Town on 19 to 21 March 2027.
April and May: long rains
Roads turn slick, many lodges close or discount, and the herds drift north through the central Serengeti. It suits travellers who value quiet and lower rates over predictable weather. Mountain trails are muddy. Beaches are quieter, though the sea is cloudier.
June to September: the dry months
Grumeti River crossings run roughly June to July, and the Mara River crossings in the north fall around August and September. They are never guaranteed, and herds cross in both directions, so plan several days in the north rather than one. Nyerere National Park is at its best from late June to November, with boat and walking safaris from its lodges. Dry months also suit Kilimanjaro climbs, which require a registered operator and a licensed guide.
October to December: the return south
The herds head back towards Ndutu with the short rains of November and December. Between October and March, Mafia Island divers hope for whale sharks, though sightings are never promised. Zanzibar reef trips from Nungwi and Kendwa to the Mnemba reef carry a marine fee, reported at about USD 20 per person on top of the boat price.
Costs that do not change with the month
- Parks bill in US dollars and accept card or e-payment only at the gate, so operators normally prepay.
- Arusha, Tarangire and Manyara run about USD 59 per adult in peak season.
- Ngorongoro charges about USD 70.80 per adult, and the crater descent adds USD 295 per vehicle.
- The Serengeti is about 8 to 9 hours by road from Arusha to Seronera, so it needs a multi-night stay.
Paperwork and packing
Apply for an e-visa through the immigration portal . Since 1 October 2026, inbound insurance is compulsory, reported at around USD 44, and one policy covers the mainland and Zanzibar. A yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a risk country. Malaria is present below about 1,800 m, so ask a clinician about tablets. Plastic carrier bags are banned, so pack cloth or paper bags. On Zanzibar, cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and villages.
