Ljubljana With Kids, Age by Age
Ljubljana With Kids, Age by Age
A four-year-old and a fourteen-year-old want different days, and Ljubljana can give both without leaving the pedestrian centre. Children can run ahead on car-free streets, which makes the city easy for small ones. This plan sorts the options by age.
Under 5: short and sweet
The castle funicular takes about a minute and has a glass cabin that small children enjoy. A return is €6 for adults and €4.50 reduced. The free Kavalir electric cars run inside the pedestrian zone from 06:00 to 22:00, which saves tired legs between stops.
Tivoli Park is the city’s largest park, with chestnut avenues and wide lawns for running about. Pack a picnic from the market colonnade.
The Žaba tourist boat is the gentlest cruise. Children aged 4 to 12 pay about €5 and adults about €10, and the ride lasts an hour. Take snacks.
Ages 6 to 10: hands-on days
This is the best age for the House of Experiments at Trubarjeva cesta 39. It has about 60 interactive exhibits on physics, light and sound, and adults pay about €11. Opening hours are 10:00 to 13:00 from Tuesday to Thursday and 10:00 to 18:00 at weekends.
The Museum of Illusions at Kongresni trg 13 is about €9.95 for adults, and a family ticket is about €24.95. The castle is also at its best at this age. A family ticket is €36, or €46 with the funicular, and the Ljubljana Castle site lists the exhibitions. The electric wooden boat costs about €8.44 for children aged 6 to 13. Check family-friendly river cruises for current departures.
Teens: bikes, towers and caves
Teenagers tend to like independence. BicikeLJ registration is €1 for seven days, the first hour is free, and later hours cost €1, €2 and €4. Rules for young riders are on bicikelj.si , so read them before you hand over a card.
The Viewing Tower at the castle has a metal spiral staircase and a 360-degree view that teens will want to photograph. The Ljubljana Card is worth a look for a family with older children, because children aged 6 to 14 pay €26 for 24 hours, €31 for 48 hours and €35 for 72 hours. The Visit Ljubljana card page shows what each card includes.
A day trip for all ages
Postojna Cave is 46 km from Ljubljana, and an electric train carries everyone into the caverns. The Vivarium has olms, the blind cave salamanders sometimes called baby dragons. The temperature is 10°C all year, so bring jackets even in July. Rain capes can be rented on site for €6. Compare Postojna tours that include transport. The cave alone is €34.90 at peak times, and the Postojna Cave Park site shows the ticket types.
Cheap treats
The attraction-tours page lists every ticket by price. Štruklji from the market colonnade cost about €4 to €6.50 and make a filling snack. A slice of cream cake from a town bakery is about €4 to €5.50. City buses cost €1.50 per ride, and walking is usually just as quick.
Practical notes
Pickpockets work crowded places such as the central bridges and the bus station, so keep bags zipped in the pushchair. The pedestrian centre has no traffic, but hold small hands near the water. Most stops above are within ten minutes of each other on foot.
Pacing the week
Alternate one big stop with one free one. A morning at the House of Experiments works well before an afternoon in Tivoli Park, and a castle day works well before a lazy boat ride. Book the castle online for the lower fare, and keep Postojna for the day when the weather turns.
