Ljubljana Day Trips by Season
Day Trips From Ljubljana, Month by Month
Slovenia’s day trips change character with the calendar. Gorges and alpine lakes belong to spring and summer, and caves hold steady at any time of year. Pick the trip by season and the weather rarely spoils it.
Spring: April and May
Vintgar Gorge opens in April and runs through October. Entry is €10 for adults and €5 for children. The €15 all-in-one ticket adds the Vintgarjenje trail and Green Access, which covers the car park and the e-bus. Cars cannot drive to the gorge. Tickets are sold online only at tickets.vintgar.si .
Pair the gorge with Bled, which is 55 km northwest of Ljubljana and about 45 to 55 minutes by car. Bled Castle charges €19 for adults and opens daily from 08:00 to 20:00 between April and October. Check blejski-grad.si for current hours. Public transport thins out beyond the main roads, so compare car hire in Ljubljana if you plan to link the gorge and the lake.
Summer: June to August
Swimming at Bled is allowed only in the designated zones, such as the lifeguarded Castle Bathing Area. For the lake itself, the pletna rowboat to the island is €20 for adults for the round trip, and it takes cash. Free shuttle buses run in July and August, which helps with parking. Browse Bled tours if you would rather not drive.
Bohinj is the quieter lake, about 80 km and 1 hour 20 minutes away in Triglav National Park. The Vogel cable car climbs to 1,535 m, and a summer return for adults is about €32 to €35. Lift dates change through the year, so check vogel.si before setting out.
Autumn: September to November
Caves come into their own. Postojna is 46 km southwest, and the cave alone costs €34.90 at peak times. The “Two Adventures” combination with Predjama Castle is €49.90 to €58.90. An electric train carries you in and the visit continues on foot, with the temperature near 10°C all year. See Postojna Cave Park for the ticket types.
Škocjan Caves are about 75 km southwest and are a UNESCO site. A guided tour crosses a huge river canyon at roughly 12°C, and Škocjan Caves Park lists the tour times.
Vintgar’s season ends in October, so go early in the month.
Winter: December to March
Bled Castle shortens its hours to 08:00 to 18:00 from November to March. Kranjska Gora’s ski season starts in December, and Vogel’s lifts serve skiers as well, with details on vogel.si winter pages .
Piran on the Adriatic is about 120 km and 1 hour 20 minutes from Ljubljana. Its Venetian-style town walls and Tartini Square are as good in the cold months as in summer.
Getting there without a car
Bled has an Arriva bus from Ljubljana that takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Vintgar is reached by free parking and an e-bus from the lot, and also from Bled bus station. Postojna and Škocjan are simplest by car or on a guided trip, and the loop through Bohinj is easiest in a hire car.
Packing and timing
Mountain weather changes fast in the Julian Alps, so carry a rain layer at Bohinj and Vintgar, and never hike alone. Caves are 10°C at Postojna and about 12°C at Škocjan, so a fleece helps. Pair these with the 5-day itinerary for a longer stay. Keep a day in reserve for a swap: if Bled is clouded in, drive to the caves instead and try the lake the next morning.
The verdict
The best all-round day is Bled plus Vintgar in May or September, and the best wet-weather day is Postojna. Book Vintgar online ahead, since the gorge admits 245 people at once, and take a warm jacket to Postojna.
