Colombo Couple Activities by Interest
Two people rarely want the same day in a city as warm and crowded as Colombo. Find the one thing you both care about, build the day around that, and let the rest go. Here are the city’s best shared activities, sorted by the kind of couple they suit.
If you both travel for food
Start on Galle Face Green around 17:30, when the carts fire up. Share a few isso wade, the lentil patties crowned with a whole spiced prawn, at LKR 150 to 250 each, and pick the cart with the longest queue, where the oil stays hottest. Then walk or take a short PickMe ride to Ministry of Crab in the Old Dutch Hospital. Crabs are sold by weight, from about LKR 12,000 for a small one to beyond LKR 45,000, and one large crab between two is plenty; ask the weight before it is cooked. The restaurant closes on Poya days and fills weeks ahead, so book on ministryofcrab.com .
If you both love buildings
Colombo is Geoffrey Bawa’s city, and two of his spaces make a natural pairing. Number 11 on Bagatelle Road, his house and studio, is shown on 45-minute guided tours at LKR 5,000 per foreign adult, with weekday tours at 10:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and fewer slots at weekends; reserve through the Geoffrey Bawa Trust . Afterwards, head on to The Gallery Café at 2 Alfred House Road, set in his former architectural studio and open daily 10:00 to midnight; Paradise Road takes reservations. Seema Malaka, his pavilion on Beira Lake, is a short ride away for anyone who wants a third.
The verdict: this is the strongest half-day for two in the city. Take the 14:00 tour, then stay at the café through the late afternoon.

If you both need to slow down
A long flight and Colombo’s humidity call for a quiet afternoon. Spa Ceylon Luxury Ayurveda has branches on Ward Place and in the Old Dutch Hospital, with 60 to 90 minute treatments at roughly LKR 12,000 to 25,000 each; it offers couples’ packages, so book the two of you together. Before or after, the Dilmah t-Lounge on Chatham Street pours single-estate Ceylon tea for LKR 800 to 1,500 a pot until around 19:00.
If one of you wants the view
Two views, two moods. The Chequerboard lawn at the Galle Face Hotel serves sunset drinks from 17:00, with cocktails at about LKR 2,000 to 3,500 and a bagpiper playing as the flag comes down at dusk. Later, the Lotus Tower deck, about 244 meters up, is open to 22:00 Monday to Friday and 23:00 on Saturday and Sunday; seen from the top, the city lights and the lake are at their best after dark. Foreign adults pay about $20, as listed on the tower’s site .
If you would both rather leave the city
Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 90 minutes south by the Southern Expressway, is the classic couple’s day out. Walk the 17th-century Dutch ramparts and the lighthouse in the late afternoon, eat on the walls and drive back in the dark. Shared transfers and guided days can be compared by searching Galle Fort day trips .
Practical notes
- Poya, the monthly full-moon holiday, stops alcohol sales across the island, including on the Chequerboard lawn. Check the date before you plan a sunset drink.
- Book every ride on PickMe after dark; metered fares beat street quotes by a long way.
