Colombo Day Trips, Ranked by Drive Time
A day trip from Colombo is a trade between hours in a vehicle and hours somewhere better. The four trips below are ranked from shortest drive to longest, with what each one gives back for the time you spend getting there.

1. Negombo: closest, and handy for the airport
Up the E03 expressway towards the airport, Negombo is a fishing town with deep Catholic roots, often called “Little Rome”. Be at the Lellama fish market early, when the boats land the night’s catch, then take a boat along the Dutch-era canal and out into the mangroves of the lagoon. Because the airport sits on the same road, Negombo works as the final day of a trip with an evening flight.
2. Bentota: an hour for a river and two gardens
South on the Southern Expressway, Bentota is the shortest run to real greenery. River boats on the Madu Ganga thread through tunnels of mangrove, and nearby Brief Garden was the landscaped home of Bevis Bawa; his brother Geoffrey’s country estate, Lunuganga, is in the same area. 3. Galle Fort: the full day
Galle’s walled old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is the trip that rewards the most hours once you arrive. Driving takes about 90 minutes on the Southern Expressway; the train from Colombo Fort needs 2 to 2.5 hours but hugs the shore; unreserved fares are roughly LKR 300 to 800, with times on Sri Lanka Railways . Circle the 17th-century Dutch ramparts, visit the lighthouse, browse the shops in the lanes and end the day at Flag Rock, watching local cliff divers leap into the ocean as the sun goes down.
4. Kandy: possible, but long
Kandy is about 3.5 hours each way by road, which leaves a short middle of the day for a very full city. The rail line into Kandy is still under repair, so check train status before you plan on it. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is open daily 05:30 to 20:00; the LKR 3,000 foreign ticket includes the temple’s museums and the Royal Elephant Stable. Cover shoulders and knees, expect a security check, and leave shoes at the counter; ritual times are on the temple’s official page . The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya open 07:30 to 17:00 for foreign adults at LKR 3,000, and the walk around Kandy Lake is free and 3.2 km long.
With seven hours on the road, Kandy works far better with a night there.
The verdict
For a first trip out of Colombo, choose Galle: 90 minutes on the road buys a whole day of walking. On the day you fly, choose Negombo, which is already on the way to the airport.
Overnight only
Sigiriya and Dambulla each sit at least 4 hours’ drive from Colombo, and Yala 5 to 6. All of them need at least one night away.
Before you leave
- The west and south coasts, Negombo to Galle, get the southwest monsoon from May to September, with rain and rough seas; October to February is the drier stretch there.
- A car and driver costs roughly $60 to 90 a day, and fuel quotas returned in 2026, so confirm the booking the evening before.
