4 Days in Colombo: First-Timer Plan

Colombo itself is honestly a 1-2 day city, so a 4-day plan is really one day in the city plus three days built around it. This version adds both Galle and Kandy, then closes with Negombo since it sits close to the airport for departure day.
Day 1: Fort, Pettah, Galle Face Green
Morning
Colombo Fort and the restored Old Dutch Hospital, then Pettah: Sea Street’s gold traders, the 1908-09 Jami-Ul-Alfar (Red) Mosque, and the 2014 floating market.
Afternoon
Gangaramaya Temple and the Seema Malaka pavilions on Beira Lake (~$1 entry). Lunch at Upali’s by Nawaloka, roughly $6-10/person. Cover shoulders and knees at any temple, and never pose with your back to a Buddha image.
Evening
Sunset at Galle Face Green for street food, then dinner at Ministry of Crab if you’re splurging (crab by weight, easily $40-60/person).
One concrete tip: apply for your ETA at eta.gov.lk before you land, it’s free for 40 nationalities since 25 May 2026 and takes 24-48 hours.
Day 2: Galle day trip
Morning
The coastal train or Southern Expressway south to Galle, 1.5-2 hours each way. Walk the ramparts of the UNESCO Dutch Fort.
Afternoon
Explore the old town’s boutiques inside the Fort walls; lunch there runs roughly $8-15/person.
Evening
Return to Colombo for a simple dinner near your hotel.
One concrete tip: take an early train out to beat the day-tripper crowds that build through late morning.
Day 3: Kandy day trip
Morning
An early train to Kandy, roughly 2.5-3 hours each way. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (entry around LKR 1,500).
Afternoon
Time around Kandy Lake and the town center before the return journey; this is a long day, so keep afternoon plans light.
Evening
Back in Colombo by evening; a quiet dinner rather than a big night out, since this is the longest day of the trip.
One concrete tip: many visitors wish they’d made this an overnight instead of a day trip. If your schedule allows it, consider swapping a night in Kandy for a night back in Colombo.
Day 4: Negombo and departure
Morning
Negombo, about an hour north and close to the airport: the fish market and lagoon are the highlights, and it’s an easy half-day rather than a full one.
Afternoon
Head to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), itself about 30km north near Negombo, so this day doubles as your transfer day. Budget 40-50 minutes from Negombo, longer from central Colombo.
Evening
Departure. If your flight is late, use the extra time for last-minute shopping at Pettah or a final Ceylon tea somewhere quiet.
One concrete tip: verify the current LKR/USD rate before your last cash withdrawal; the rupee moved from around 310/USD in January 2026 to roughly 335/USD by August.
Getting around and where to stay
There’s no Grab in Sri Lanka; use PickMe or Uber and insist on the meter. Kollupitiya or Fort work well as a base for days 1-3; if your flight is very early, a Negombo hotel on day 4 saves the transfer time.
