Colombo Romantic Getaways by Nights Away
The best romantic getaway from Colombo depends less on where you go than on how many nights you can spare. One night keeps you close to the city, two get you inside a fort on the sea, and three or more open up the tea hills and the quiet south coast. Pick the number first; the place follows.
No nights: an evening in the city
If you cannot get away at all, give one evening to the classic pair. The Galle Face Hotel, on the seafront since 1864, serves sunset drinks on its Chequerboard lawn from 17:00, with cocktails at about LKR 2,000 to 3,500 and bagpipes as the flag is lowered at dusk. Dinner follows at The Gallery Café, 2 Alfred House Road, in Geoffrey Bawa’s former studio, open daily until midnight; book a courtyard table through Paradise Road .
One night: Mount Lavinia
The Mount Lavinia Hotel, about 10 km south, was built in 1805 as the governor’s palace of Sir Thomas Maitland and still faces straight onto the beach. Book a room with an ocean-view balcony, eat seafood on the terrace after dark and walk the sand in the morning. The coastal train from Colombo Fort runs beside the surf most of the way there; times are on Sri Lanka Railways . Rooms can be compared on Booking.com for Mount Lavinia .
From May to September the southwest monsoon brings rip currents to this beach, so swim only when the flags allow.
The verdict: for a single night, Mount Lavinia beats a rushed trip to Galle. You travel about 10 km instead of about 120 km each way, and the sunset is over the same ocean.
Two nights: inside Galle Fort
Galle’s walled old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, about 90 minutes from Colombo on the Southern Expressway. With two nights there you get the 17th-century ramparts at sunset, out past the lighthouse to Flag Rock, and again at dawn. Stay within the walls if you can, so every walk starts at your door.
Three nights or more: the hills or the far south
- Tea-estate bungalows around Nuwara Eliya and Hatton are colonial planters’ houses among working plantations. Rates vary widely, so compare carefully. There is no through train from Kandy into the tea country while the line is repaired: go by road from Kandy, or take the Nanu Oya to Ella stretch, which runs. Guided estate stays can be found on Viator’s Nuwara Eliya listings .
- Pidurangala at sunrise, near Sigiriya: a pre-dawn climb for about LKR 1,000 each that opens at 05:00, watching the sunrise light up Sigiriya’s lion rock across the forest. Sigiriya is more than 4 hours from Colombo, so it needs its own night.
- Tangalle or Mirissa villas on the south coast. Whale-watching trips leave Mirissa from November to April only.
Before you book
- Poya, the monthly full-moon holiday, stops alcohol sales across the country, hotel bars included. Check the date before you plan a sunset drink.
- October to December brings heavy rain and landslide risk in the hill country; the UK travel advice page carries current warnings.
- A couples’ Ayurveda treatment at Spa Ceylon in the Old Dutch Hospital, 60 to 90 minutes at roughly LKR 12,000 to 25,000, is an easy way to start or end a getaway in Colombo.
