Couple Activities Worth Planning in Sheki
Fourteen rooms is not many, and every one of them is inside an 18th-century stone caravanserai built for Silk Road traders, not honeymooners, which is exactly why couples book it out first.
Sleep inside the caravanserai
The Yukhari Karavansaray, one of the largest surviving Silk Road caravanserais in the South Caucasus, runs 14 refurbished rooms as the Karvansaray Hotel around a vast cobblestone courtyard shaded by old trees. The public tea house and courtyard stay open to non-guests 11:00 to 19:00, but staying the night is a different experience entirely: a vaulted stone room, thick timber doors, and the courtyard fountain running after the day-trippers have gone. An evening at Gagarin, and a quieter one after
Gagarin Restaurant sits on the upper slope of town with a panoramic view over Sheki’s terracotta roofs and the Caucasus range behind them, a fair spot for grilled lamb and a glass of local pomegranate wine as the light drops. For something quieter the next evening, look for one of the small garden cafes along the river where a shared samovar of tea and a plate of walnut Sheki halva substitute for dessert; none of these take reservations, so a walk-in around sunset is the normal way in.
A private look at the Shekikhanovs’ House
Where the Khan’s Palace draws the crowds, the Shekikhanovs’ House is the quieter 18th-century winter residence nearby, its salons painted with scenes from Nizami Ganjavi’s romantic poems, Khosrow and Shirin among them. It rarely has a queue, which makes it the better of the two for a slow, unhurried look at the frescoes rather than a shuffle past them.
Getting the logistics right
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) bring the mildest weather for walking the old town hand in hand; summer is warmer but still cooler than lowland Baku thanks to the mountain air. Carry Azerbaijani manat in cash: taxis, small cafes and entry desks here run on it, and the currency has held steady at roughly 1.70 AZN to the US dollar since 2017.
