Bucharest Day Trips, Season by Season
The right day trip from Bucharest depends on the month. Bucharest lies on the Wallachian plain, and the mountain towns of Sinaia and Brașov sit across the Carpathians, which means different light, different crowds and, in one case, a closed castle. Each season below has its best excursion.
Spring: Brașov for walking
Trains from Gara de Nord reach Brașov in roughly 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes. Fares in 2026 ran from about 29 lei on a Regio train to about 54 lei on an InterRegio in second class; check cfrcalatori.ro or infofer.ro for today’s price. The old town centres on Council Square, the Black Church, the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul, and Strada Sforii, one of Europe’s narrowest streets. A cable car climbs Mount Tâmpa for the view.
Summer: Sinaia and Peleș early
Sinaia is 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes by direct train, and Peleș Castle is the draw. Summer is the busiest period, so aim for the first slot. Visits run on hourly timed tickets, capped at 2,000 a day at Peleș. Tickets are sold only at bilete.peles.ro or at the machines beside the castles, cannot be refunded or moved, and cost 100 lei for adults and 25 lei for students.
Peleș is closed every Monday and Tuesday. Doors open Wednesday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Thursday to Sunday from 09:15 to 17:00, and nobody enters after 16:00. Pelișor next door is 30 lei for adults. The castles’ own site lists hours.
Autumn: finish Peleș before November
Autumn is a good time for either castle, with cooler mountain air. Peleș is closed from 2 November to 1 December 2026 for conservation, and Pelișor is closed until 3 November, so schedule the visit earlier in the month or after the closure. Bran Castle keeps long hours until 1 November: Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 19:00 and Monday from 12:00. From 2 November it closes an hour earlier.
Bran has no train. Ride to Brașov, then take the bus from Autogara 2, about 50 minutes and roughly 13 lei, or a taxi. Tickets are listed as from about 40 lei, with higher prices for guided and fast-pass options; confirm on bran-castle.com . The castle was a Saxon customs fortress and later a royal summer home. Vlad’s princely court stood in Bucharest, at Curtea Veche.
Winter: short and warm
With early darkness, choose a trip you can finish by mid-afternoon. Sinaia reopens to Peleș from 2 December, and snow adds to the setting. Brașov in December is easy by rail. From 2 November Bran closes at 18:00.
