Romantic Bucharest by Neighbourhood
Romantic Bucharest, Neighbourhood by Neighbourhood
Romance in Bucharest is less about one grand gesture and more about choosing the right corner for the right hour. The sections follow neighbourhoods, from the lantern-lit lanes of the Old Town to the quiet lake at Cișmigiu and a spa just outside the city.
The Old Town: dinner in an 1808 inn
The Old Town, around Lipscani, is the place to start an evening. Hanul lui Manuc, built in 1808, is the oldest operating inn in the city, a two-storey wooden caravanserai around a cobbled courtyard. Order Fetească Neagră red wine and grilled Romanian dishes beneath the lanterns. Menu prices vary, so ask the inn when you book.
Close by, the little Stavropoleos Church dates from 1724 and has a carved porch and a quiet courtyard. Entry is free. Cărturești Carusel, a bookshop in a former bank with spiral galleries, rewards a slow browse together.
Calea Victoriei: gelato and a concert
Calea Victoriei is Bucharest’s grand avenue, lined with Belle Époque buildings and pedestrianised on some weekends from spring to autumn. Walk it at dusk with gelato.
The Romanian Athenaeum on Strada Benjamin Franklin is the finest evening of all. Its 41-metre domed rotunda is wrapped by a long fresco of Romanian history, and the George Enescu Philharmonic plays there. Concert tickets begin from about 30 lei, and the programme is posted on the Athenaeum website . The box office is open Tuesday to Friday from 12:00 to 19:00.
Cișmigiu Gardens: a lake in warm weather
The gardens are a short walk from Calea Victoriei, with willows around a lake. In the warmer months you can hire a small rowboat; check on the day that boats are running.
Just outside the city: Therme București
At Balotești, about 30 to 40 minutes north, the Palm and Elysium zones are adult-oriented. The Palm has relaxation pools beneath real palm trees, and Elysium adds saunas and panoramic pools. Adult tickets are tiered by zone and time: The Palm from 102 lei for three hours on weekdays, Elysium from 132 lei, and up to 187 and 217 lei for a full weekend day. Towels and robes are extra; see therme.ro .
A day in the mountains
Sinaia is 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes by train. Peleș Castle costs 100 lei and is closed Monday and Tuesday, and from 2 November to 1 December 2026; buy tickets only at bilete.peles.ro .
