Leaving Bucharest for several nights can mean an easy train ride or a long cross-country haul. The options below are ranked by effort, from one change of seat to a full day of connections, so you can match the trip to your energy and your schedule.
Easy: one night in Sinaia
Direct trains run from Gara de Nord to Sinaia in 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, and fares are roughly 25 to 45 lei one way; confirm on cfrcalatori.ro . Staying overnight lets you reach Peleș Castle when the first timed slots open. The castle costs 100 lei for adults and closes every Monday and Tuesday. It is shut from 2 November to 1 December 2026 for conservation, and the next-door Pelișor, at 30 lei, reopens on 3 November. Tickets are sold only through bilete.peles.ro .
Moderate: Brașov as a base
Trains reach Brașov in about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes. From a base in the old town you can add Bran Castle, thirty kilometres away, by bus from Autogara 2 in about 50 minutes for roughly 13 lei. Zărnești’s Libearty bear sanctuary is another half-day outing from Brașov. Visits are guided, take online tickets, and run Tuesday to Sunday; see millionsoffriends.org .
A sensible shape is two nights in Bucharest, then Sinaia on the way to Brașov, with the last day for Bran.
Longer: Sighișoara
Sighișoara adds a UNESCO-listed Saxon citadel, about 2 to 2.5 hours on from Brașov. Treat it as a fifth day, with a late return to the capital. Book train seats on the CFR site in advance.
Hardest: the Danube Delta
The delta is Europe’s largest river delta, with more than 300 bird species. It is also the most demanding journey. There is no direct train to Tulcea; rail needs a change at Medgidia and takes about six hours, so most people take the direct bus from Autogara Augustina, about 4.5 to 5 hours, or drive for four to five hours. Allow three or four days and arrange boats and lodging with local operators; no prices are quoted here for them.
