Panama City Day Trips: Canal to Islands
Bocas del Toro and Boquete land on a lot of “day trip” lists, but both sit 7+ hours from Panama City by road, so treat them as overnights instead. What genuinely fits inside a single day, out and back from the capital, is a shorter and much more satisfying list.
Taboga Island, a 30-minute hop
The Taboga Express fast ferry leaves Balboa Yacht Club / Flamenco Marina on the Amador Causeway and reaches the island in 30 minutes flat, round trip $24.00 adult, $14.00 child or senior. The village is car-free, so wander to the Church of San Pedro, founded in 1524 and one of the oldest churches in the hemisphere, climb Cerro de la Cruz or Cerro Vigía for the skyline view back toward the city, and check the tide for the Playa Restinga sandbar, which only appears at low water. El Valle de Antón, up in the caldera
125 km west of the city, 2-2.5 hours by car or a direct Albrook Terminal minibus for about $4.25 one way. The La India Dormida ridge trail is a 2-hour hike for $3.00 entry, following the silhouette of a sleeping princess past waterfalls to a crater-rim view. El Níspero Zoo and Botanical Garden ($5.00) hosts the Panama Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Center, working to save the critically endangered Panamanian golden frog, and Chorro El Macho waterfall adds hanging canopy bridges for another $5.00. Portobelo and Fort San Lorenzo
A 1.5-2 hour drive north on Route 38D covers Fort San Lorenzo’s cliffside ramparts above the Chagres River mouth ($5.00 MiAmbiente entry), the Agua Clara locks, and Portobelo’s colonial ruins, where the Church of San Felipe holds the Black Christ. These run as direct transfers; downtown Colón is not part of the route, and for good reason, its city center carries a real street-crime risk that the coastal forts and ruins do not. Gatún Lake boat safaris

The verdict
