Panama Multi-Day Trips Worth Planning
Three destinations outside Panama City reward the extra nights it takes to reach them properly: Guna Yala, Bocas del Toro, and the Chiriquí highlands around Boquete. Each one turns a rushed day trip into a trip worth remembering once you give it the time it actually needs.
Guna Yala (San Blas Islands), 2 to 3 days
Around 05:00, a shared 4x4 collects passengers from Panama City lodging and crosses the cordillera to Puerto Cartí in about 2.5 hours, for $50-60 round trip per person. From Cartí, a motorized dugout canoe (panga) runs $20-40 round trip to your island. The Guna comarca charges $20-22 in entry tax plus a separate $2-5 Cartí port fee, cash only, with an original passport required. Cabañas on islands such as Isla Chichime or Isla Diablo run $80-130 a night with three rustic meals included, plus daily boat hops to neighboring sandbars. Snorkeling and free-diving are the water activities on offer; the Guna Congress bans scuba diving throughout the comarca.
Bocas del Toro, 3 to 4 days
Air Panama flies Albrook (PAC) to Isla Colón (BOC) in 50 minutes, airpanama.com , $110-150 one way, and domestic flights never leave from Tocumen. Going overland instead means an overnight coach from Albrook Terminal to Almirante (10 hours, about $28) plus a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town ($6.00). Once there, water taxis connect Bocas Town, Isla Carenero ($1-2), and Old Bank on Isla Bastimentos ($4-5), and a guided day boat covers Cayo Coral snorkeling plus Cayos Zapatilla inside Bastimentos Marine National Park ($30-40 pp plus a $10 park fee).
Boquete and Chiriquí, 3 days
A 50-minute flight from Albrook to David (DAV), $90-130 one way, connects to a 45-minute taxi or bus into Boquete ($2 bus, $30 taxi); the 7-hour Albrook-to-David bus runs $15-18 for a slower budget option. A workable three-day rhythm: day one for Geisha coffee cupping and cloud forest hanging bridges, day two for the 9 km Sendero Los Quetzales trail connecting Boquete to Cerro Punta ($5 park entry, a guide is worth every dollar, permits set by MiAmbiente ), day three for Caldera hot springs ($3.00 entry) and whitewater rafting on the Chiriquí Viejo.
