Epic Day Trips From Seoul and Busan
Korea’s rail network turns “day trip” into a genuinely honest label for most of the peninsula, as long as you pick destinations the trains can actually reach and back in daylight.
From Seoul: fortress, forest and gardens
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress sits 30 km south of the capital, reachable in 45 minutes on Subway Line 1 (1,900 won) or half that by KTX. King Jeongjo’s 18th-century fortress still rings the old town with 5.7 km of intact stone battlements; walking the walls is free, and a tourist trolley (4,000 won) or a shot at traditional Korean archery (2,000 won for 10 arrows) fills out the visit.
Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm pair well for a full day 60 km east of Seoul: the ITX-Cheongchun train to Gapyeong Station takes 40 to 55 minutes for 6,900 won, then a city tour bus day pass (8,000 won) gets you between sites. Nami’s entrance is 16,000 won for foreign adults, including the return ferry, or you can zip across the Han on an 80-meter wire for 49,900 won. Entry to the Garden of Morning Calm is 11,000 won.
Closer in, Bukhansan National Park is a half-day escape by subway (Line 3 to Gupabal, then Bus 704), with a 3-to-4-hour round trip scramble up granite slabs and wire-rope railings to Baegundae Peak at 836 meters. From Busan: ancient capital, southern coast
Gyeongju is the standout: the KTX from Busan Station to Singyeongju takes just 28 to 32 minutes, from 11,000 won one-way. From there, Express Bus 700 reaches Bulguksa Temple, or Bus 50/51 gets you to the Daereungwon Royal Tombs downtown. Renting an electric scooter or bike (15,000 won a day) is the easiest way to cover Cheomseongdae, East Asia’s oldest astronomical observatory, and Wolji Pond, the illuminated 7th-century royal pond (walk the perimeter only; there’s no boating on this protected site).
Tongyeong, “the Napoli of Korea,” is 1.5 hours southwest by intercity coach from Busan’s Sasang Terminal for around 12,000 won. Ride the Tongyeong Cable Car up Mount Mireuksan (17,000 won return) for views over more than 150 islands in Hallyeohaesang National Marine Park, then race down the Skyline Luge (30,000 won for three rides). Book the Tongyeong cable car and luge combo ahead on weekends.
The trip that isn’t a day trip
Jeju Island keeps showing up on “day trip from Seoul” lists, and it shouldn’t. Flights run about 1 hour 10 minutes each way, but airport transfers and island transit mean you need a minimum of 2 to 3 nights to see anything beyond the runway. Book KTX tickets on the official Korail booking site starting 30 days before departure at 7am KST, and skip third-party resellers who mark tickets up 30 to 50 percent.
