Family-Friendly Jeju: Gardens, Mazes, Rides
Four different kinds of “big” wait for families on Jeju, and none of them are a padded museum with a gift shop at the end.
Start small and quiet at Snoopy Garden in Gujwa-eup, a 20-acre outdoor park and indoor pavilion built around the Peanuts comic strip and tucked into native volcanic pine forest and oreum hills. Bronze character statues dot sensory nature walks, and a rooftop observatory gives young kids a reason to climb something without a real elevation gain. Entry runs about 18,000 KRW for adults and 12,000 KRW for children, and a couple of hours here is plenty before energy or attention spans run out.
For something bigger, Aqua Planet Jeju in Seongsan is one of Asia’s largest public aquariums, anchored by a 5,000-ton main tank called The Sea of Jeju where sand tiger sharks and manta rays circle overhead. The aquarium also runs a daily presentation on traditional Haenyeo diving culture, worth catching if your family hasn’t already seen the real divers working the coast; it’s a useful primer before or after visiting Seongsan Ilchulbong itself, a short drive away.
Maze Land in Pyeongdae-ri claims the world’s longest stone maze, 5.3 kilometers built from 2,200 tons of porous black Jeju basalt, plus separate cedar and camellia hedge mazes for younger kids who’d rather not commit to the full stone circuit. Split the group by patience level and meet at the exit; nobody has to finish the same maze at the same pace.
Jeju Shinhwa World in Andeok is the full theme-park swing: rollercoasters, character rides in its Larva Land section, and wave pools for children who just want to get wet and stay wet for an afternoon. It’s the one stop on this list that eats a full day on its own, so don’t try to bolt it onto a sightseeing itinerary.
Getting between these four stops takes real driving distance, since Snoopy Garden sits in the northeast near Gujwa-eup while Jeju Shinhwa World is down in Andeok on the southwest side; renting a car for family days beats stringing together bus transfers with young kids and their bags in tow. Pack snacks and water regardless of which stop you pick, since Maze Land and the Snoopy Garden trails both involve real walking in open sun with limited shade along the way.
The verdict: Snoopy Garden and Maze Land pair well as a single half-day loop since they’re both low-key and forgiving of short attention spans, while Aqua Planet and Shinhwa World each deserve their own day.
