Family Days in Athens, Zoo Included
The zoo most people mean when they say “Athens Zoo” is actually Attica Zoological Park, and it’s out near the airport, not anywhere close to the city center.
Attica Zoological Park
In Spata, roughly 20km east of central Athens, this park holds over 2,000 animals across around 350 species, a considerably larger and more varied collection than a quick city-center visit would ever suggest. Its dolphins moved to Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida in May 2025, so a dolphin show isn’t part of a current visit. Attica Zoological Park’s site has current hours and pricing; factor in real travel time from the center, since public transport out to Spata involves at least one change and a taxi or rental car is usually the more practical option with young kids and stroller gear in tow.
The National Garden
This shaded, free green space behind the Parliament building has playgrounds, walking paths, and a small menagerie, including peacocks and ducks, an easy stop that needs zero advance planning. Its shaded benches make it a genuine midday retreat in summer heat, not just a quick pass-through between other sights.
Hellenic Children’s Museum
Based in Plaka, this hands-on museum lets kids engage directly with interactive exhibits rather than look at things behind glass, a solid option when the midday heat makes outdoor sightseeing unappealing.
The Athens Riviera beaches
Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Alimos are all tram-accessible and genuinely suited to families, with several calm, shallow sections and nothing beyond the standard summer heat precautions most families already plan around anyway.
Making the day work
Athens gets genuinely hot in summer, so mornings or late afternoons work better than midday for the zoo or the beach. Pack sunscreen and water regardless of season, and check ahead for stroller access if combining any of the above with the ancient sites, several of which have uneven terrain or steps. Shoulder season, April-May or September-October, keeps the heat manageable for a full day out with kids without losing much daylight compared to summer.
Attica Zoological Park is worth the trip out but needs the most planning of anything here; the rest of this list works fine decided the same morning.
