Gdańsk with Kids by Age Group
A four-year-old and a fourteen-year-old want different things from a city, and Gdańsk can satisfy both if you plan by age rather than by landmark.
Under 7: animals, sand and short walks
Gdańsk Zoo in Oliwa at ul. Karwieńska 3 covers 125 hectares of forest, with around 160 species including elephants, giraffes, lions and penguins. There is a petting zoo and a mini-train, the Kolejka Retro, that circles the grounds, so small legs get a rest. It opens daily from 09:00; check current tariffs at zoo.gda.pl . Take the SKM to Gdańsk Oliwa and then a city bus; the line is listed at ztm.gda.pl .
Malbork Castle admits children under 7 free on the Historical route, which costs 80 PLN regular and 60 PLN reduced in the 2026 summer season. The Grounds route at 35 PLN and 25 PLN is shorter, about 1.5 hours, and suits a restless toddler. Monday is free for the grounds. Read the options at zamek.malbork.pl .
Sopot is 20 minutes on the SKM. The wooden pier charges only from 10 April to 30 September, at 5 PLN for children 3 to 16, and under-3s go free; from 1 October the pier is free. If you go to the beach, the Baltic reaches only about 18 to 22 degrees Celsius in August, rip currents form near the breakwaters, and a red flag means nobody swims. Blue-green algae can close beaches in late summer.
Ages 7 to 12: ships, hands-on science and amber
The SS Sołdek, moored on Ołowianka Island, was the first oceangoing steamship built in postwar Poland, launched in 1948. Children can walk through the engine room and wheelhouse, and the Maritime Granaries next door have interactive displays. Check days and prices on nmm.pl . The medieval Crane across the water costs 23 PLN, or 17 PLN reduced, and entry is free on Wednesday from 13:00 to 17:00; its exhibit explains how dockworkers walked giant treadwheels to lift cargo.
Hevelianum on Góra Gradowa, behind the main railway station, is a hands-on science centre in restored brick fortifications, with a planetarium and a hilltop terrace over the Main Town. Opening days vary, so confirm them at hevelianum.pl before you climb the hill.
The Amber Museum in the Great Mill at ul. Wielkie Młyny 16 shows insects and a lizard trapped in amber for 40 million years. A family ticket costs 99 PLN, and the museum opens 10:00-18:00 except Tuesday. Branches of the Museum of Gdańsk are free on Monday. Teenagers: heights and long days
St Mary’s Basilica has a tower climb of about 400 steps to a flat roof with views over the whole Tricity, and the tower is seasonal, so ask at the basilica before you set off. Malbork’s Historical route is the natural choice for this age. In Gdynia, the Emigration Museum sits in a 1933 ferry terminal, 35 minutes from Gdańsk Główny on the SKM. Hel’s seal sanctuary is a full day trip, about 100 km each way.
Getting around with children
City tickets cost 4.80 PLN for a single trip or a 75-minute transfer, and 2.40 PLN reduced; a 24-hour ticket is 22 PLN. Buy them on the Jakdojade app or in the vehicle. The Main Town is pedestrian and cobbled, so bring a sturdy pushchair or a carrier.
The verdict
For a first family day, take the zoo with under-7s and the Sołdek with older children, and keep Malbork for a separate morning.
