Islamabad Family Outing Ideas
Safety notice, 31 October 2026. On the US State Department’s list Pakistan sits at Level 3, Reconsider Travel (page dated 16 June 2026), and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are the areas where the US advises against or to reconsider travel. The UK FCDO (update of 27 October 2026) does not name Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree or Taxila in its warnings, though it does warn against all or all but essential travel to places such as Balochistan, Peshawar, Swat and the zones along the Afghan border. Recent attacks in the capital include a court bombing in November 2025 and the Tarlai mosque bombing of 6 February 2026. Before you commit to dates, read the US travel advisory and the UK foreign travel advice . Allow for checkpoints, road closures during protests and mobile-network shutdowns, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and carry your original passport.
Plan the day around three stops
Children do best in Islamabad with a short list: the aviary, one museum, and some outdoor space. Everything else is optional.
The aviary on Rawal Lake
Lake View Park holds the Islamabad Bird Aviary. Tickets are about PKR 100 for grown-ups and PKR 50 for children, and the park’s own gate is put at PKR 20 to 50. Pedal and rowing boats go out when conditions allow. District orders have more than once ended motorboat use on the lake.
A museum with young visitors
The Pakistan Monument Museum on Shakarparian tells the story of the Pakistan Movement and independence, with Jinnah and Iqbal corners, and under-7s enter free. It runs 10:00 to 20:00 from Tuesday to Sunday. Foreign adults are charged about PKR 2,000. Outside, the monument’s four large petals stand for the provinces, with three smaller petals beside them. The Lok Virsa Heritage Museum next door has the same under-7 rule and a Monday closure. Ticket details are on Lok Virsa .
For train fans
Golra Sharif Railway Museum is open from about 09:00 to 16:00, with a 13:00 finish on Fridays. A ticket was PKR 50 in a 2024 report, so confirm at the gate.
Park time and indoor time
Playgrounds and walking loops make Fatima Jinnah Park in F-9 an easy outdoor stop. For wet or hot days, Megazone in F-9 Park and the Centaurus Mall fun zone in F-8 are the indoor picks, so call ahead for opening times.
No zoo, no safari
Marghazar Zoo shut in December 2020, and its site now shelters rescued wildlife without public access. The Malpur safari park remains a proposal, so plan your animal time around the aviary.
Walking with children
Trail 5 near F-5 is the gentler of the two main Margalla trails. Leopards, wild boar and macaques live in the park, so keep everyone close, go in daylight, avoid dawn and dusk, and descend before sunset. Small tips
The viewpoint at Daman-e-Koh costs nothing, but monkeys there grab food, so hold snacks tightly. Foreigner ticket prices are commonly 5 to 10 times the local rate. Bring the original passport.
