Baku Overnight Trips by Number of Nights
Government advice, in short. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s border with Armenia and against all but essential travel to the Karabakh-area districts, where mines and unexploded ordnance remain, and the US State Department rates the country Level 3, Reconsider Travel. The routes below head north and west from Baku, away from those areas. Air entry is normal, while land and sea entry is restricted. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you commit to dates.
Baku works as a hub for trips of two to four nights, but the roads are long and the mountain stretches are slow. Choose the trip that matches the nights you have, and keep the plan to one or two stops. Costs are in manat (AZN), at about 1.70 AZN to the US dollar.

Two nights: Sheki
The bus from Baku to Sheki takes 6 to 6.5 hours each way, at about 6 to 9 AZN a seat (check before travelling). With a journey that long, one night is the minimum, and two nights leave a full day on foot without a bus at either end. Entry to the Khan’s Palace has been 15 AZN for foreign adults since 1 January 2026.
Two nights: Quba and Khinalug
Quba is about 170 km from the capital, and the road takes 2.5 to 4 hours depending on traffic. Khinalug is a mountain village 50 to 60 km above Quba, reached by a mountain road with a taxi or 4x4 from Quba. Spending a night in each place spreads the driving.
Two nights or more: Gabala
Gabala is about 220 km from Baku, a drive of 3.5 to 4 hours. The best-known mountain base in the area is the Tufandag resort. Allow a second night if you want to see more than the resort.
Shahdag, for the slopes
Shahdag in the Qusar district is about 210 km away and roughly 3 hours by car. The resort lists 37 slopes, 45 km of pistes and 20 lifts, with a one-day adult pass at 45 AZN. That makes a very long day trip from Baku, so most people sleep at the resort.
Staying in Baku for three or four days
A long weekend can be filled without leaving the capital area at all. One day goes on the Old City and the Seaside Boulevard, one on the Absheron fire sites and Gala, and one on Gobustan and its mud volcanoes. A fourth day suits museums or a hammam. The 4 day Baku itinerary spreads these over a longer stay.
Entry rules that shape the plan
- Fly in. Do not plan road or rail legs to Georgia, Russia, Iran or Armenia, and the Baku to Tbilisi train is not open to e-visa holders.
- Most visitors need an e-visa from evisa.gov.az, costing about US$20 to 30 depending on service charges.
- Karabakh needs a permit, mines remain there, and the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to it.
- Carry AZN cash for buses, guesthouses and small village shops.
