Cebu Multi-Day Trips Worth the Long Haul
Cebu Island runs over 200km north to south, long enough that its two best-known escapes, Malapascua and Bantayan, sit 4 to 5 hours from Cebu City in opposite directions. Trying either as a day trip wastes most of a day in transit for an hour on the sand; all four routes below assume you’re staying over.
Malapascua: thresher sharks, 2 to 3 nights
A Ceres bus or private van from the Cebu North Bus Terminal, behind SM City Cebu, covers the 4 to 5 hours overland to Maya Port, followed by a 30 to 45 minute outrigger crossing. The reason to make the trip is a 4:30am boat to Kimud Shoal or Monad Shoal, the world’s most reliable spot to dive with wild pelagic thresher sharks on their morning cleaning-station visits. Afternoons go to the underwater tunnel at Gato Island, home to whitetip reef sharks and pygmy seahorses, or a day-boat run to the sandbar at Kalanggaman Island. Malapascua accommodation on Agoda is worth booking early since the island’s dive-focused resorts are small and fill up around the dry season.
Bantayan: beaches and skydiving, 2 to 3 nights
Bus or van from the North Bus Terminal to Hagnaya Port in San Remigio runs 3.5 to 4 hours, then a RoRo ferry covers the last hour to Santa Fe Port. Bantayan’s draw is its white sand without Boracay’s density: Sugar Beach, the sandbar at Kota Beach, the underground freshwater pool inside Ogtong Cave, and cliff jumping at Virgin Island off Silion. Southern Cebu grand circuit: 3 to 4 nights
This one rewards a rental car or a chartered van and driver. Day one covers the roughly 3-hour drive to Moalboal for an afternoon in the sardine run and turtle-grazing reef at Panagsama Beach. Day two starts with the guided canyoneering descent at Kawasan Falls, then continues to Dalaguete for a sunset hike up Osmeña Peak or the quieter, steeper Casino Peak. Day three is the southern waterfall trail: the 5-tier hands-on scramble at Aguinid Falls in Samboan, the jungle-framed Dao Falls, and the misty curtain of Tumalog Falls. Negros Oriental, Apo Island and Siquijor, 3 to 4 nights
From Bato or Santander at Cebu’s southern tip, a 30-minute ferry across the Tañon Strait reaches Tampi or Sibulan, putting you in Dumaguete within the hour. Apo Island, a community-run marine sanctuary, is the highlight: snorkeling directly over shallow reefs where wild hawksbill and green sea turtles feed on seagrass a few meters from the boat. Extend further to Siquijor for Cambugahay Falls, centuries-old balete trees, and cliff jumping at Salagdoong Beach.

None of these four belong on a single-day itinerary out of Cebu City, whatever a same-day tour listing claims. If you have one block of multi-day time, Malapascua wins for anyone who dives and Bantayan wins for anyone who just wants a beach; the Southern Cebu circuit is the better pick if you want variety over volume, since it mixes canyoneering, mountains and waterfalls without a second boat crossing.
