Launching Treks From Kathmandu
For a huge share of visitors, Kathmandu serves as the launch pad rather than the destination itself. This is where multi-day treks to Everest, Annapurna, Langtang and Manaslu get permitted and outfitted before a short flight out, and it’s where you land back for a hot shower and a real bed once the mountains are done with you.
The mandatory-guide rule changed everything in 2023
Since 1 April 2023, every foreign trekker, whether traveling solo or in a group, must be accompanied by a licensed, government-registered guide inside Nepal’s national parks and conservation areas, including Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu and the Everest/Khumbu region. Unguided solo trekking is simply not on the table here anymore, no matter how experienced you are. Book through a Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal -affiliated agency in Thamel, and confirm your specific guide is individually licensed, not just the agency they work for.
Everest, a short flight and a long walk
Flights from Kathmandu to Lukla take under 35 minutes and land at 2,860 meters, the real starting line for the Everest Base Camp trek. During peak seasons (March to May, September to November) many operators route through Manthali Airport in Ramechhap instead, a roughly 4.5-hour road transfer followed by a shorter Lukla hop, to dodge Tribhuvan Airport delays. Build real slack into any schedule touching a Lukla-adjacent flight; weather cancellations are routine, not exceptional. The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality collects its own entry fee (about NPR 3,000) at Lukla or Monjo. Everest region trekking packages are listed on GetYourGuide .
Annapurna runs through Pokhara, not Kathmandu
Pokhara, not Kathmandu, is the actual gateway for Annapurna region treks. Getting there means either a 25-minute flight or a genuine 7 to 10-hour overland drive on the Prithvi Highway, longer once the monsoon starts washing sections of road out. The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit runs roughly NPR 3,000 to 3,390 on top of the mandatory guide fee. Kathmandu to Pokhara transfers are bookable on Viator .
Langtang and Manaslu, closer but still real commitments
Langtang Valley sits roughly 120 kilometers north of Kathmandu and can be reached by road, with treks typically running 5 to 7 days round trip through Langtang National Park to Kyanjin Gompa monastery at 3,800 meters. Manaslu circuit treks require the same mandatory-guide rule plus a restricted-area permit, and both regions demand the same acclimatization discipline as anywhere else above 3,000 meters: no more than 300 to 500 meters of altitude gain per day without a rest day built in.
Beyond the trekking, two real multi-day extensions
Pokhara and Chitwan National Park are the standard non-trekking multi-day add-ons from Kathmandu, and both genuinely need 3 to 4 days minimum. Neither is a day trip, no matter what an old itinerary might promise; see our Kathmandu day trips guide for what actually fits in a single day instead.
Insure properly before you go
Buy travel insurance that explicitly covers helicopter evacuation up to 6,000 meters, and use TAAN-accredited agencies only. Nepal has prosecuted organized fraud rings that pressured mildly symptomatic trekkers into unnecessary, expensive helicopter rescues; a verified insurer and an accredited operator are your real protection against both altitude and bad actors.
