Warsaw as Your Poland Home Base

Białowieża Forest, 2-3 days
Europe’s last stretch of primary lowland forest, and the place to actually see wild European bison rather than a zoo enclosure. It’s about 220 km east: train to Hajnówka, then a short bus or car into the reserve. A licensed guide is required inside the strict nature reserve itself, arranged locally rather than freelanced. Masurian Lakes, 3-4 days
A 3-hour drive or train north to Giżycko or Mikołajki puts you on Poland’s lake district for summer sailing, canoeing and a slower pace than anything in the capital.

A westbound loop along the E20 rail line links Gothic Toruń, Copernicus’s birthplace and gingerbread capital, with Renaissance Poznań, roughly 3 hours apart by direct train.
