Geiranger Romantic Getaways: Fjords for Two
Geiranger sells itself as a honeymoon backdrop before you even step off the ferry, and the couples who get the most out of it aren’t the ones who just take photos at Flydalsjuvet, they’re the ones who book at least one indulgence to go with the view.
Hotel Union Geiranger , run by the same Mjelva family since 1899, centers on the Union Spa: a 1,500 square meter wellness space with an indoor pool, an outdoor heated pool and whirlpool looking straight at the fjord, Finnish saunas, a Turkish steam bath and a Japanese hot bath, plus daily sauna rituals. The hotel’s private vintage car museum (1920s and 1930s Buicks, Cadillacs and Studebakers) is an unexpected bonus for a rainy afternoon, and Restaurant Julie runs a 3 to 5 course Nordic tasting menu built on Sunnmøre lamb, fjord trout and local berries. Grande Fjord Hotel , 2 km from the village center directly on the shoreline, is the quieter alternative: private balconies, rooftop jacuzzis with fjord views, and the sixth-floor Preikestolen Restaurant for a sunset dinner, all without the cruise-ship foot traffic that passes through central Geiranger by day.
For a genuinely different setting, Hotel Union Øye in Norangsdalen, about an hour away via the Hellesylt ferry, is an 1891 Swiss-chalet-style hideaway with Victorian antiques, four-poster beds and guest rooms named after former patrons like Kaiser Wilhelm II and Queen Maud. It works better as a day excursion for tea or a candlelit dinner than as a home base, given the distance from Geiranger’s boat departures.
The smaller couple-sized moments matter too: a sunset sailing on the silent electric catamaran once the day’s cruise ships have left, quieter and free of engine noise; a private tandem kayak paddle into the coves in the early morning stillness; and cloudberry or aquavit truffles at Geiranger Sjokolade’s waterfront café in the old Holenaustet boathouse. Book the sunset fjord cruise specifically, not the midday departure, if quiet is the point.
Do not confuse the two Union hotels. Hotel Union Geiranger sits in the village; Hotel Union Øye is a separate historic property 45 km away in Norangsdalen. Booking the wrong one by name alone is an easy mistake.
