Heidelberg for Couples: A Weekend Plan
Heidelberg suits a slow weekend for two: little driving, short distances on foot and a skyline that is well known from paintings and poems. This plan runs from Friday evening to Sunday, with notes on dates and bookings.
Friday evening: arrive and cross the river
Settle into a hotel in the Altstadt or near Bismarckplatz, then walk down to the Alte Brücke. Cross to the north bank and turn around for the view of the castle above the red roofs. The Brückenaffe, a bronze monkey with a mirror beside the bridge gate, is a light-hearted photo stop. Dinner can be at Zum Roten Ochsen, Hauptstrasse 217, a student inn in the Spengel family for generations. Telephone ahead for a table. Kulturbrauerei Heidelberg at Leyergasse 6 suits a more modern meal with its own beer.
Saturday: the castle, then the hillside
Visit the castle in the morning, when it opens at 09:00. The ticket is €11 for adults until 31 December 2026 and €12 from 1 January 2027, and includes the funicular up from Kornmarkt, the courtyard, the Great Tun and the Pharmacy Museum. The garden is open in daylight. Spend the afternoon on the Philosophenweg, a path of about 2 km that runs level along the Heiligenberg slope after a steep start up the Schlangenweg. The cobbles are slippery in rain, leaves and frost, so go well before dusk and carry a torch if you plan to come down late. Benches at the Philosophengärtchen face the castle. Heidelberg was a centre of German Romanticism in the early 1800s, and the circle that wrote Des Knaben Wunderhorn met here between 1805 and 1808.
Sunday: slow morning, sweets and the river
Pick up a Studentenkuss, a chocolate wafer with nougat cream, at Knösel, Haspelgasse 16. From spring to autumn a 50-minute Weisse Flotte cruise from the Stadthalle pier starts at €19. In winter the same company runs a mulled wine cruise from €22.
The two big dates
The castle illumination is held on two Saturdays a year, which in 2027 are 10 July and 4 September. The ruin turns red, and the fireworks begin at 22:15 for around 15 minutes. Watching is free. Roads close from 16:00 and there is no parking nearby, so travel by public transport. Evening cruises from Weisse Flotte that look out on the show begin at €89.90. Heidelberg Marketing keeps the event details .
The Christmas market of 2026 runs from 23 November to 22 December across six squares, with an ice rink on Karlsplatz below the castle.
