Romantic Panama City: Free to Splurge
Panama City has no resort strip, yet a handful of evenings here rival anywhere on the Pacific: the skyline catching fire across the bay, a restored old quarter glowing after dark, a car-free island an hour away. The list is short, so here it is by budget, from free to a proper splurge.
Free
Walk to the Paseo Esteban Huertas sea wall or Plaza de Francia in Casco Viejo an hour before sunset. The towers of the modern city catch the last light, and the old quarter’s lamps come on as you linger. Afterwards, wander the restored lanes of the core, where tourist police patrol and plazas stay lit. The Amador Causeway is the second free option: a 6 km breakwater with water on both sides, lovely at dusk.
Under $50 for two
A shared pour-over of Geisha coffee at Sisu, Bajareque or Café Unido costs about $9 to $16 a cup and makes a slow morning in a courtyard. The Taboga ferry from Fuerte Amador takes 30 minutes and costs $24 per adult return, so $48 for two, and you will need ID or a passport. Taboga has flower-lined lanes, no cars and a quiet beach at Playa Restinga. Book at Taboga Express , and stay the night if you can: the island empties once the last day trippers leave.
The evening out
Casco Viejo has open-air rooftop lounges, including Tantalo, Selina and CasaCasco, where DJs play relaxed deep house against the sunset. Arrive early on weekends to secure a rail seat. For a long dinner, the city has tasting-menu kitchens such as Maito, Fonda Lo Que Hay and Cantina del Tigre. Reserve ahead and ask each restaurant for its current menu and price. You can also look at sunset catamaran sails on Panama Bay through GetYourGuide , which list the departure point and what is included.
The big gesture
Spend a night on a Guna Yala island: a 4x4 and boat from the city, a simple cabana and hammocks over turquoise water. The journey starts near 05:00, entry fees apply, and payment is cash only, with a passport required. It rewards couples who like adventure over comfort.
Practical tips
- Pay in US dollars; balboa exists only as coins.
- After dark, travel between Casco Viejo and downtown or the causeway by Uber, and stay in the lit, restored streets.
- The dry months from December to April bring the clearest sunsets.
- Request an upper-floor room at a Casco Viejo boutique hotel for skyline views.
- Visit Panama’s tourism site lists current regional events.
The multi-day trips page covers San Blas and Taboga overnights in more detail.
Verdict: sunset on the sea wall, then a rooftop table, is the best single evening in the city.
