Punta del Este for Two: Sunset and Wine
One good day for two in Punta del Este has a shape: a long lunch inland, an afternoon by the sea and the sun going down at Casapueblo. The stops below follow that order.
Lunch at the winery
Bodega Garzón sits on Camino Arco del Sol in Garzón, around an hour from the peninsula. The chef Francis Mallmann is the winery’s ambassador and culinary director. The first seating is at 12:30, and tables are reserved a day ahead. The two menus are UYU 3,900 (Garzón) and UYU 5,000 (Fire) per person. Start your booking on the restaurant page .
An afternoon at José Ignacio
East of La Barra, José Ignacio is a fishing village turned resort. Walk to the lighthouse, then sit down at a beach restaurant, with La Huella among the best known. Restaurants keep seasonal hours, so confirm that your choice is open, especially outside December to February.
Sunset at Casapueblo
Casapueblo stands at Punta Ballena, about 13 km west of the peninsula. Carlos Páez Vilaró designed it and started work in 1958, and it holds a museum, gallery, cafe and hotel. At sunset each evening a recording of his poem is played. The site says to arrive 40 minutes or more beforehand. Museum admission is UYU 600, and the building opens daily at 10:00. Read the official page before you go.
A quiet walk by the water
Playa Mansa has calm water on the bay side of the peninsula, which makes it a gentle place to walk at the end of the day. At Playa Brava, on the ocean side, keep to the sand: there are rip currents, and swimming belongs inside a lifeguard zone.
What to book first
- A table at Bodega Garzón, which needs 24 hours of notice.
- A room, because the hotels named below set their own rates and availability.
- Dinner at a José Ignacio beach restaurant, if you travel in the busy months.
The winery is about an hour inland, Casapueblo is about 13 km west of the peninsula, and José Ignacio lies east of La Barra, so a car or taxi will save time between them.
Where to stay
Fasano Las Piedras, Playa Vik José Ignacio and The Grand Hotel on Parada 10 of Playa Brava are three hotels to compare. Rates change through the year, so check them directly with each hotel. Booking search results are on Booking.com .
Timing and transport
December to February is the high season, with the first half of January the most crowded. In other months, more places shut or shorten their hours, so reserve tables early. A hired car or taxi makes the winery and sunset legs easy; the Montevideo guide helps with the journey from the capital.
