Cologne Sightseeing for First-Timers
If this is your first trip to Cologne, the sightseeing list is shorter than it looks: one cathedral, one museum, and the riverfront that ties them together, done properly rather than rushed.
The cathedral, first
Kölner Dom is where a first visit starts. Since 1 July 2026, sightseeing entry outside worship hours costs €12 regular, €6 reduced, with free access kept for services, private prayer, candle-lighting, under-14s and severely disabled visitors plus a companion; the full list is on koelner-dom.de . Book a skip-the-line tower and treasury ticket at €8 / €4 each, or €12 / €6 combined, rather than queueing at the base. The 533-step south tower climb has no lift, so budget more time than the number of steps suggests.
One museum, not three
For a first visit, pick one: Museum Ludwig, at €19.80 adult / €13.50 reduced, free under 18, covers Picasso and Pop Art in depth. The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, €8 to €13 depending on the current exhibition, leans medieval through Impressionist. Trying to fit both into a first day usually means rushing one of them, so choose the collection that actually interests you rather than both out of completeness.
Where the Roman collection actually is
Skip planning a stop at the Roman-Germanic Museum’s own building on Roncalliplatz; it has been closed for structural repairs since 2018 and isn’t due back before 2030. Its mosaics and Roman-era grave goods are on show instead at Belgisches Haus , Cäcilienstraße 46, a short walk from Neumarkt.
The river, on foot or by boat
The Hohenzollernbrücke, covered in love locks, is a free five-minute walk from Roncalliplatz and gives the first clean view of the cathedral from across the Rhine. A 1-hour panorama cruise from Frankenwerft runs €15 to €18 for a different angle on the same skyline.
First-day logistics
A KVB single fare is €3.50, a 24-hour ticket €8.40, and the compact center is walkable enough that transit is optional for most of this list.
