Walking the Valleys Near Göreme

All valleys other than Ihlara can be reached from town on foot. The timings are guide figures, so allow extra.
Rose and Red Valleys
Güllüdere (Rose) and Kızılçukur (Red) link into one walk. Guides say about 2 to 3 hours, and many people time it for the evening so that the rock colour is at its best. Start with enough daylight to finish.
Pigeon Valley
Güvercinlik Vadisi runs between Göreme and Uçhisar. Look up at the cliffs to see the dovecotes cut into them, but do not enter them. Walking one way and taking a ride back is a simple option.
Love Valley
Bağlıdere is walked along its floor, with the rock pillars on both sides. It is free.
To the museum
The path from the village to the Göreme Open-Air Museum is about 1.5 km. See the official hours before you set off.
Ihlara canyon
A river path with rock-cut churches, reached by tour or driver. Guides mention a 14 km gorge, about 380 steps down and roughly 4 km walked. Pair it with Selime Monastery.
Ground rules
Tuff is soft and crumbly. Expect loose scree, slippery patches, steep drops and summer heat. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and sun cover, and stay off the fairy chimneys. Keep to the paths near edges.
Choosing a route
For a first evening, take Rose and Red Valleys. For a half day with an easy finish in another village, take Pigeon Valley toward Uçhisar. Save Ihlara for a day with transport, and give it a full day on its own.
