Kathmandu's Old Town, Step by Step
The medieval layout of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur isn’t a preserved museum piece, it’s a fully working street plan, still moving grain, spice and pilgrims through the exact same lanes it did centuries ago. Walking it beats any vehicle for actually seeing it. Just know going in that there are no sidewalks outside the pedestrianized cores, so you’ll be sharing the road with motorbikes, delivery carts and the occasional wandering cow.
Thamel to Durbar Square, through the working bazaars
Start at southern Thamel (Chhetrapati) and head southeast along the old trade route through Ason Chowk, Kathmandu’s oldest open-air spice, grain and brass market, anchored by the three-story Annapurna Temple. Keep going through Indra Chowk, known for glass bead necklaces and the Akash Bhairav Temple, and you’ll walk straight into Kathmandu Durbar Square at Basantapur. It’s 2.5 kilometers, 1.5 to 2.5 hours of unhurried walking. Go early, 7:00 to 9:00 am, while vendors are still spreading produce on the temple steps and morning puja bells are ringing across the square. Patan’s monastic courtyards reward slow wandering
From Patan Durbar Square, head north into the quiet, pedestrianized stone lanes to find the Golden Temple (Kwa Bahal), a 12th-century Buddhist monastery covered in gilded brass and bronze repoussé work; foreigner entry is NPR 100. Continue to Kumbheshwar Temple, one of only five five-tiered pagodas in the whole valley, then push into the Hakha and Oku Bahal quarters to watch metal-casting workshops at work behind open doors. Bhaktapur’s pottery-and-craft circuit
Enter through the Lion Gate, take in Durbar Square, then walk east along the brick alleys to Taumadhi Square, dominated by the towering Nyatapola Temple and Bhairavnath Temple. Turn south into Pottery Square (Bolachhen) to watch clay being thrown on wooden wheels, then continue east to Dattatreya Square for the 15th-century Peacock Window carved into dark sal wood at Pujari Math. Boudhanath’s kora walk, best at dusk
Circle the great stupa clockwise (kora), spinning the brass prayer wheels as you go, then climb to the third plinth level for a closer look at the painted eyes. Wander the back lanes afterward to find Shechen and Jamchen monasteries. Give it 1.5 to 2 hours and time it for dusk, 5:00 to 7:00 pm, when butter lamps start lighting up around the base.
Walk smart
Wear shoes with real grip, since flagstones get slick and uneven fast, watch for open drainage grates that aren’t always marked, and keep a hand on your bag in the densest bazaar stretches.
