Stepantsminda Footpaths and Trails
Before you go (October 2026): Britain’s FCDO advises against all travel to the Russian-occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia and against all but essential travel to land immediately next to their boundary lines, while the US State Department lists Georgia overall at Level 1 and those two regions at Level 4, Do Not Travel. Truso Valley lies close to South Ossetia, so keep to the signed track, take a passport and never walk toward the line. Rescue in the Georgian mountains can be slow; use a guide on glaciers and summits.
Walking in Stepantsminda means trails more than streets. The town itself is compact, so the footpaths that matter lead out of it. This page puts them side by side, then gives a few notes on each. Pay for transfers in Georgian lari (GEL), in cash.

The Gergeti trail in detail
The path leaves Gergeti village on the far bank of the Tergi river from the town centre. It gains 450 to 520 m before reaching the church at 2,170 m, and walkers need about 1 to 1.5 hours to get up. Choose between a direct, stony route through a ravine and a smoother, winding path under pines. A preserved Mokhevian tower stands near the path in the village. Good boots help on the stones.
Snow and ice turn the path slippery between November and February. Entry to the church is free. Visitors cover knees and shoulders, women also cover their hair and wear a long skirt, and men take off hats and wear long trousers. Wraps, scarves and aprons are provided at the entrance. Please keep cameras and drones away from the interior.
Gveleti falls
From the trailhead, the path forks. The small fall is 10 to 15 minutes away, and the big one is up to 45 minutes, depending on where you start. It drops about 30 m, and you reach its base by scrambling over rocky steps. Sturdy shoes are the main requirement.
The town and the museum
The main square has the bus and Delica stands, bakeries and ATMs. A short walk leads to the Kazbegi Museum at Kazbegi Street 2, once the home of the writer Alexander Kazbegi. The listed schedule is Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:30, and entry is 5 GEL, but the museum has been reported temporarily closed, so check before you go.
Sno stone heads
Stone heads by the sculptor Merab Piranishvili are set along the road in the Sno valley. Ask your driver for the distance from town, then walk along the roadside.
The longer days
On the Truso track, the walking is flat but long. Georgian border guards are posted at Zakagori Fortress, so carry a passport and keep to the track. The Juta road collapsed in June 2025 and its last 2.6 km is reported closed to vehicles, which adds about 40 minutes of walking before the Chaukhi Lake trail even begins.
