Hafengeburtstag (Port Anniversary)

8-10 May 2026. Billed as the world’s largest port festival, marking the city’s harbor charter that dates back to 1189. Expect tall ships, tugboat parades, fireworks over the Elbe, and a genuinely festive stretch of the Landungsbrücken and HafenCity waterfront.

Hamburger DOM

Three separate runs: spring (20 March-19 April), summer (24 July-30 August), and winter (6 November-6 December) 2026. A traditional funfair on the Heiligengeistfeld, near St. Pauli, going back centuries. Rides, games, and fairground food, including Fischbrötchen and Franzbrötchen stalls.

Reeperbahn Festival

16-19 September 2026. Europe’s largest club festival, taking over dozens of venues along the Reeperbahn and Grosse Freiheit, from small clubs to the Elbphilharmonie itself. Book accommodation early; St. Pauli fills up fast.

Rathausmarkt Christmas market

23 November-23 December 2026. Hamburg’s main Christmas market, in front of the Rathaus, with mulled wine, handmade crafts, and stalls that spread into the surrounding squares.

Altonale, a community arts and culture festival in Altona with live music, theater, and outdoor art, typically runs in June. Hamburg Pride (Christopher Street Day) brings a parade and a week of events, usually around late July or early August. Elbjazz Festival, a jazz festival across harbor and HafenCity venues, has historically run in a May slot near Hafengeburtstag, though it hasn’t run every single year, so check whether it’s on before you build a trip around it. A cherry blossom festival tied to Hamburg’s sister-city relationship with Yokohama draws crowds to Planten un Blomen’s Japanese garden in spring, timed to whenever the blossom actually opens that year rather than a fixed date.
