7 Best Nature Spots Near Xi'an
Xi’an’s nature is mostly a train ride or a short drive away, in the Qinling range that borders the city to the south. Here are seven spots worth the trip.
1. Mount Huashan
About 30 minutes by high-speed rail from Xi’an North, Huashan is one of China’s Five Great Mountains, with sheer granite peaks, cable cars, and the harnessed “Plank Walk in the Sky.” Budget a full day; it’s a genuine day trip, not a quick stop.
2. Qinling Mountain Foothill Parks
South of the city, smaller forest parks in the Qinling foothills offer easy trails, streams, and modest waterfalls, a lower-commitment green day than the full Huashan trip.
3. City Wall Green Belt
The 13.7km City Wall loop is lined with trees and gardens along much of its length, a walkable or cyclable green corridor through the heart of the historic city.
4. Tang Paradise Grounds
This Tang-dynasty theme park’s landscaped grounds, lakes, and gardens near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda make for a relaxed green walk between the more historically dense sights nearby.
5. Datang and Qujiang Lakes
Flat, paved paths circle these city lakes, popular with locals for morning walks and evening strolls, a calmer counterpoint to the Muslim Quarter’s crowds.
6. Huaqing Palace Gardens
Beyond the Tang-dynasty hot springs and the 1936 Xi’an Incident history, the palace grounds include gardens and a short hike partway up Lishan for a view over the site.
7. Han Yang Ling Surroundings
The parkland around this Han-dynasty tomb complex, about 25km north, is quiet and green, a good pairing with the glass-floor tomb museum itself for a slower half-day.
Most of these spots pair well with a rest day between two more demanding days, whether that’s the Terracotta Army or a full Mount Huashan trip. None require the advance booking the Shaanxi History Museum does, so they’re easy to slot into whichever afternoon opens up on the day itself. Bring water and sun protection even for the flat, paved options, since Xi’an’s summer heat and humidity make even an easy lakeside walk more tiring than it looks on a map.
