6 Best Photo Spots in Surabaya
Surabaya’s photogenic core splits into two very different subjects: colonial and independence-era architecture in the city, and one of Java’s most photographed sunrises a few hours down the road. These are the 6 spots worth building a shot list around.
1. Tugu Pahlawan at dusk
The 41-meter Heroes Monument is lit at night against the surrounding park, and the wide plaza around its base gives room for a full-height shot without crowding. Come at dusk for the transition between daylight and floodlight.
2. Hotel Majapahit’s Art Deco facade
Opened in 1911 as the Hotel Oranje, the hotel’s white facade and manicured entrance courtyard read as one of the most complete colonial-era frontages left in the city. Ask at the lobby before shooting inside; the public areas are generally fine, guest floors are not.
3. Sunan Ampel Mosque and the Arab Quarter’s market lanes
The narrow lanes leading to the mosque are dense with color, fabric, and prayer goods for sale, a strong contrast to the mosque’s own quiet, pale courtyard. Go respectfully, this is an active pilgrimage site, not a photo set, and ask before photographing people directly.
4. The Monkasel submarine, lit up at night
The real KRI Pasopati submarine, reassembled here as a walk-through museum in 1998, is illuminated after dark against the surrounding riverside park, a strong low-light subject unlike anything else on this list.
5. The Suramadu Bridge from Kenjeran
Indonesia’s longest bridge, at 5.4km, is best framed from the Kenjeran side of the strait at sunset, with the cable-stayed towers catching the last light before the crossing to Madura goes dark.
6. Mount Bromo from Penanjakan at sunrise
The marquee shot in the region: the smoking cone of Bromo rising out of the flat gray Sea of Sand caldera, shot from the Penanjakan viewpoint (2,770m) just before sunrise. Arrive in the dark with the jeep tour groups; the crowd at the rail is real, and an early arrival buys a better spot.
Timing and gear notes
Golden hour in the city works well for the Heroes Monument and Hotel Majapahit; the Sunan Ampel lanes are more about midday market activity than any particular light. For Bromo, dress warmly, the pre-dawn wait at Penanjakan is genuinely cold despite Surabaya’s heat, and a longer lens helps isolate the crater from the crowd of viewing platforms around it.
