Where to Stay in Surabaya: 4 Areas
Most visitors don’t stay in Surabaya for long. It’s usually a stop before or after Bromo and Ijen rather than a multi-night destination in its own right, so the choice of area comes down to what you actually need it for. Here are the 4 that matter.
Central Surabaya: Tunjungan and the CBD
This is the practical first-visit base: central, close to the House of Sampoerna and Hotel Majapahit, and reasonably walkable to the edges of the Old Town. Expect the widest hotel selection here, from budget chains to the city’s better-known properties.
Near Surabaya Gubeng station
A sensible choice if you’re planning a rail leg, toward Malang or onward to Banyuwangi for Ijen, since you can walk to the platform rather than crossing the city in traffic on travel-day morning.
The Old Town: Ampel and Chinatown
Atmospheric and heritage-rich, with Sunan Ampel’s tomb and the Kya-Kya Chinatown lanes on your doorstep, but grittier and less polished than the other three areas. Better for sightseeing during the day than as a base for most travelers, though it rewards anyone prioritizing heritage immersion over polish.
The mall clusters: HR Muhammad and Darmo
Modern and business-oriented, favored by corporate travelers and further from the Old Town sights, but well connected to everything else by Grab or Gojek.
The one named heritage property
Hotel Majapahit (MGallery) is the single well-documented historic hotel here: opened 1911 as the Hotel Oranje, renamed Hotel Yamato under Japanese occupation, and the site of the 19 September 1945 flag-tearing incident that helped spark the Battle of Surabaya. Restored and reopened in 1996, it’s officially a cultural heritage landmark. Beyond it, book by area and current rating rather than chasing a specific name; Surabaya’s hotel market turns over quickly outside this one property.
A quick way to decide: first-timers who want convenience should default to Tunjungan and the CBD, rail travelers heading onward to Malang or Banyuwangi benefit from basing near Gubeng, and anyone here purely for Bromo or Ijen should treat Surabaya as a one or two-night stop rather than the trip’s centerpiece.
