4 Days in Accra: The First-Timer Itinerary

Four days is the sweet spot for a first Accra trip. Do you need a visa and a yellow fever certificate for Ghana?

Almost certainly yes to both, and neither is optional paperwork. Non-African passport holders generally need an e-visa approved before travel, applied for at evisa.immigration.gov.gh, since arriving without one risks being held at immigration. Every arriver age nine months and up needs a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate, the ICVP yellow card, or risks being denied entry outright.

Ghana’s 2026 rules moved fast. African Union nationals got a new fee-free e-visa from 25 May 2026, still an application and screening step, not a no-paperwork walk-up. Non-African travelers are quoted roughly USD 260 for a standard single-entry e-visa, up sharply from older figures, confirm the current fee and process directly at evisa.immigration.gov.gh or gis.gov.gh before you book flights. Get your yellow fever shot at least 10 days before departure, from an authorized center, since the certificate only counts once it has had time to take effect.

Malaria is the other health item to sort out early, and it is a real, year-round risk across the whole country, Accra included, not just the rural north. Ask a travel clinic about antimalarial pills, Malarone or doxycycline are commonly prescribed, well before you fly, and pack repellent for evenings on this itinerary’s outdoor stretches, especially the Kakum canopy walk on day four.

Day 1: Jamestown, Independence Square and Osu nights

Land at Kotoka International Airport, officially renamed Accra International Airport in February 2026 though the ACC/DGAA codes and the old name both still work fine, and take a Bolt into town. Spend the morning at Independence Square, the huge ceremonial plaza with the Independence Arch and Black Star Gate, a free, photogenic first stop right on the coast.

Head to Jamestown in the afternoon, Accra’s old fishing quarter, with a red-and-white striped lighthouse, a genuine boxing-gym culture, and canoe-harbor life that rewards going slow. From there, dive into Makola Market, a dense working market rather than a curated tourist one, keep valuables zipped in the crowded lanes and treat haggling as normal.

Spend the afternoon at Labadi Beach, entry runs a wide roughly GHS 20 to 100 depending on the day and which hotel is managing the gate, a lively half-day of sun, food stalls and music rather than a quiet escape. Day 3: The road to Cape Coast and Elmina Castle

Leave Accra early, the drive west to the Cape Coast area runs roughly three hours each way depending on traffic, long enough that this is an overnight, not a same-day round trip. Check into a Cape Coast hotel first, then spend the afternoon at Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482 and the oldest European-built structure in sub-Saharan Africa.

This and tomorrow’s Cape Coast Castle are profound, heavy sites of memory, dungeons and the infamous Door of No Return where captured Africans were marched onto slave ships bound for the Americas, not photo-op attractions. Day 4: Kakum’s canopy walkway and Cape Coast Castle

Get to Kakum National Park early, before the heat and the crowds, for the rainforest canopy walkway, a string of suspension bridges high above the forest floor. Budget roughly GHS 35 for the park gate plus roughly GHS 130 for the canopy walk itself for foreign visitors, and wear real shoes, not sandals.

Back in Cape Coast by late morning for Cape Coast Castle, later the seat of British colonial administration in the Gold Coast, paired with Elmina as the standout heritage stop of this whole trip, especially for diaspora travelers tracing Year of Return heritage. Head back to Accra in the afternoon, another roughly three-hour drive, and land in time for a low-key final dinner.

Should you do Cape Coast and Kakum as a day trip or an overnight?

Overnight, if you can manage it. Cape Coast is roughly three hours from Accra each way, and squeezing Elmina Castle, Cape Coast Castle and the Kakum canopy walk into one long day means six hours in the car and barely enough daylight left for the sites themselves. Splitting it across two days, as this itinerary does, lets you actually absorb the castles rather than rush past the dungeons and the Door of No Return.

Money and getting around: cedis, mobile money, Bolt and tro-tro

Ghana runs on the cedi (GHS), not CFA francs and not US dollars, floating at roughly 15 to 17 to the US dollar, check a live rate before converting any price in this itinerary. Mobile money, especially MTN MoMo, is genuinely how most everyday transactions happen here, but cards only work reliably at upscale hotels and restaurants in Osu or Airport Residential, so carry cedi cash for Makola, tro-tros, street food and the Cape Coast leg.

Bolt and Uber are the practical default for getting around Accra, agree nothing, the fare is fixed in the app before the ride starts. Tro-tro shared minibuses are the cheap local backbone but genuinely confusing on a first visit, treat them as a color experience rather than your main transport plan across four days. Traffic is heavy and unpredictable, build slack into anything time-sensitive, especially your morning departure for Cape Coast on day three.

Accra safety notes for first-timers

Ghana is one of West Africa’s more stable, peaceful democracies, and Ghanaians are widely, genuinely welcoming. The US State Department places Ghana at roughly Level 2, exercise increased caution, citing crime and health infrastructure, confirm the current wording at travel.state.gov before you go, this is the same tier the US applies to plenty of mainstream destinations, not a war-zone warning. Real, everyday frictions on this route are petty theft in crowded spots like Makola, aggressive traffic, and occasional power cuts, plan around them rather than around headline fear.

Is 4 days enough for Accra?

Yes, for a first look, and comfortably. Four days covers the honest ceiling of Accra-only sightseeing, roughly two days, plus the single most worthwhile add-on in the whole country, an unrushed Cape Coast, Elmina and Kakum overnight. What it will not reach is Aburi’s cooler hill country or a Volta Lake cruise, both genuine bonus material that push this into the 5-day , 6-day or 7-day versions.

Book the Cape Coast overnight tour before you land, sort your e-visa and yellow fever certificate weeks ahead, and keep that yellow card in your daypack, you may be asked to show it again once you are on the road.
