Day 1: Stone Town’s Old Fort and Forodhani’s night market

Spend the afternoon at the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), free to enter, built by Omani Arabs between 1698 and 1701 and now a cultural center for art and performance. Walk the narrow alleys and carved wooden doors that earn Stone Town its UNESCO listing, then close the day at Forodhani Gardens’ night market, open from around 6pm, grilled Zanzibar pizza and mishkaki skewers for a few thousand shillings each, cash only.

Day 2: the slave market, the Freddie Mercury house, and a spice tour

Book the first available half-day spice tour, cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg on a working plantation rather than a staged stop, usually US$10-40 depending on operator and whether lunch is included. In the afternoon, walk the former slave market and the Anglican Cathedral built over it in 1879, roughly US$5 covers the cathedral, memorial and small museum, and it earns a slow, deliberate visit rather than a quick photo. Add the Freddie Mercury house (about US$10, under an hour) if there’s time left. One flag worth repeating: the House of Wonders has been closed since a 2020 partial collapse and stays shut for restoration, admire the facade from Forodhani, don’t plan on going inside.

Day 3: Prison Island’s tortoises, or straight to the beach

Two honest options for the morning. Take the roughly 20-minute boat out to Prison Island (Changuu) for the giant Aldabra tortoises gifted from Seychelles in 1919, some reportedly over a century old, entry pricing is genuinely inconsistent across sources, confirm the current fee at zanzibartourism.go.tz before you go. Or skip it and use the morning to get on the road sooner instead. Either way, transfer to Nungwi or Kendwa in the afternoon, the north coast’s calm, reliably swimmable water and livelier resort scene, roughly 1.25 to 2 hours from Stone Town, and check in for the next three nights.

Day 4: Nungwi and Kendwa’s water, then Mnemba Atoll’s reef

Spend the morning on Nungwi or Kendwa’s beach, the calmest, most reliably swimmable water on the island, then head out on a full-day Mnemba Atoll snorkel or dive trip. A government marine-park conservation fee of roughly US$10 per person per day applies on top of whatever the boat operator charges, confirm the all-in total with your specific operator, this pass couldn’t pin one confirmed combined price. Matemwe, just down the coast, is the closest base if Mnemba is the actual reason for the trip, from Nungwi it’s still an easy day out.

Day 5: Jozani Forest’s red colobus monkeys, then a last beach afternoon

Arrive at Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park by 8:30am if you can, the park opens around 7:30am and the endangered Zanzibar red colobus, an endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, is far easier to spot before the mid-morning tour buses roll in around 11am. Entry runs roughly US$10 including a guide, though the exact fee varies by source. It’s a longer drive from Nungwi than Prison Island or Mnemba, budget half the day for it. Spend the afternoon back at the beach, this is the day the trip actually gets to slow down.

Is 5 days enough time in Zanzibar?

Nungwi or Paje for a first Zanzibar trip?

Nungwi and Kendwa, on the north tip, win for a first trip: the water is reliably swimmable most of the day and Mnemba Atoll is an easy add-on from the same coast. Paje and Jambiani, on the east, suit kitesurfers and budget travelers more, but swimming there depends on the tide, plan around roughly two hours either side of high tide if that coast wins instead.

Should you add Prison Island or a second beach day?

Either is a legitimate call, not a compromise. Prison Island is a genuine half-day out of Stone Town and an easy add before the transfer north, skipping it for a second relaxed beach day at Nungwi or Kendwa isn’t wasted time either, five days already covers the trip’s two headline day trips. Pick whichever matches how much downtime you actually want.

What else to know for a 5-day Zanzibar trip

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, not its own country, and the currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS), though USD works for hotels, tours and entry fees if your bills are small and reasonably new. It’s roughly 99% Muslim, so cover shoulders and knees the moment you leave Stone Town’s beach strip or Nungwi and Kendwa’s resort grounds, ordinary daywear covers the sights above. Most nationalities pay roughly US$50 for the e-visa or visa-on-arrival, and every visitor also needs a separate Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) policy, roughly US$44, that ordinary travel insurance does not satisfy, confirm both current fees at zanzibartourism.go.tz before you book flights. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the whole archipelago regardless of trip length, talk to a travel clinic before you fly.
