2 Days in Madagascar: First-Timer Itinerary
Two days is enough for exactly one thing in Madagascar: land in Tana, then a dawn walk with the indri at Andasibe-Mantadia before you fly home. Day 1: Land and go straight to Andasibe
- Land at Ivato International Airport (TNR) outside Antananarivo. Skip the city entirely this trip, transfer straight onto the paved RN2 toward Andasibe-Mantadia, roughly 3 hours in a private car or with a driver-guide
- Check into a lodge at the park edge by afternoon. If there’s daylight left, a short orientation walk on the reserve’s edge trail is worth it, this is where you’ll first hear the indri’s call carrying through the canopy, even before tomorrow’s main circuit
- Early dinner and an early night, tomorrow’s best wildlife window starts at dawn
Day 2: The indri, then the flight home
- Start the Indri Trail circuit at first light with a certified MNP guide (mandatory, paid in cash at the gate, roughly 45,000 MGA entrance plus a 25,000 MGA guide fee for this circuit). Dawn is when the indri’s territorial wail carries farthest, a sound unlike anything else on the trip
- Midday, drive back to Tana on the RN2 (about 3 hours)
- Afternoon or evening flight out of Ivato, depending on your schedule
Is 2 days enough to see Madagascar?
No, and no honest itinerary should pretend otherwise. Two days covers exactly one region, Tana plus the Andasibe indri detour, nothing on the RN7, no baobabs, no Nosy Be. If the lemurs are the whole point of the trip, this still delivers the highlight. If you want the fuller island, budget at least a week.
Should I try to see the indri the same afternoon I land?
Don’t. Jet lag plus a long-haul flight plus a 3-hour drive is a rough combination, and a rushed same-day push risks missing the dawn window entirely, when the indri’s call carries farthest and the forest is most active.
Sleep a full night in Andasibe before the dawn walk rather than squeezing it into arrival day, the circuit rewards a rested visitor far more than it rewards speed.
