7 Days in Zanzibar: First-Timer Itinerary

Seven days is enough to do Zanzibar properly without chasing every sight on the list: 1.5 days in Stone Town and a spice tour, three days at Nungwi or Kendwa with Mnemba Atoll’s reef and Jozani’s red colobus monkeys both worked in, then two more days switching coasts to Paje for a genuinely different side of the island. Day 1: Stone Town’s Old Fort and Forodhani’s night market

Land at Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ), or arrive on the Azam Marine ferry from Dar es Salaam, and check into Stone Town for the first two nights, the natural base for a trip this length. Spend the afternoon at the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), free to enter, built by Omani Arabs between 1698 and 1701 and now a cultural center for art and performance. Walk the narrow alleys and carved wooden doors that earn Stone Town its UNESCO listing, then close the day at Forodhani Gardens’ night market, open from around 6pm, grilled Zanzibar pizza and mishkaki skewers for a few thousand shillings each, cash only.

Day 2: the slave market, the Freddie Mercury house, and a spice tour

Book the first available half-day spice tour, cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg on a working plantation rather than a staged stop, usually US$10-40 depending on operator and whether lunch is included. In the afternoon, walk the former slave market and the Anglican Cathedral built over it in 1879, roughly US$5 covers the cathedral, memorial and small museum, and it earns a slow, deliberate visit rather than a quick photo. Add the Freddie Mercury house (about US$10, under an hour) if there’s time left. One flag worth repeating on a week-long trip: the House of Wonders has been closed since a 2020 partial collapse and stays shut for restoration, admire the facade from Forodhani, don’t route time toward going inside.

Day 3: Prison Island’s tortoises, then the transfer to Nungwi or Kendwa

Take the roughly 20-minute boat out to Prison Island (Changuu) for the giant Aldabra tortoises gifted from Seychelles in 1919, some reportedly over a century old, entry pricing is genuinely inconsistent across sources, confirm the current fee at zanzibartourism.go.tz before you go. Transfer to Nungwi or Kendwa in the afternoon, the north coast’s calm, reliably swimmable water and livelier resort scene, roughly 1.25 to 2 hours from Stone Town, and check in for the next three nights.

Day 4: Nungwi and Kendwa’s water, then Mnemba Atoll’s reef

Spend the morning on Nungwi or Kendwa’s beach, the calmest, most reliably swimmable water on the island, then head out on a full-day Mnemba Atoll snorkel or dive trip. A government marine-park conservation fee of roughly US$10 per person per day applies on top of whatever the boat operator charges, confirm the all-in total with your specific operator, this pass couldn’t pin one confirmed combined price. Matemwe, just down the coast, is the closest base if Mnemba is the actual reason for the trip.

Day 5: Jozani Forest’s red colobus monkeys

Arrive at Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park by 8:30am if you can, the park opens around 7:30am and the endangered Zanzibar red colobus, an endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, is far easier to spot before the mid-morning tour buses roll in around 11am. Entry runs roughly US$10 including a guide, though the exact fee varies by source. Spend the rest of the day back at Nungwi or Kendwa’s beach, this is the point in a 7-day trip where the pace actually gets to slow down before the second coast.

Day 6: the switch east, to Paje or Jambiani

Transfer to Paje or Jambiani, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours from Stone Town and a genuinely different coast from the one you just left: the island’s kitesurfing hub, real wind and a wide shallow lagoon, plus visible seaweed farming worked by local women at low tide. The honest trade-off, stated plainly: tides here swing hard, at low tide the sea can pull back 300m to a kilometer, so swim within about two hours either side of high tide rather than expecting Nungwi-style water on demand. Settle in and use what’s left of the day to get a feel for the slower, quieter pace this coast is known for.

Day 7: a last Paje morning, or Kuza Cave, before departure

Spend the morning at Kuza Cave near Paje, a natural limestone cave with a swimmable freshwater pool tied to local Swahili history, or simply stay on the beach for a last swim around high tide. Depart from Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ), or transfer back to Stone Town first if your flight or ferry leaves from there. Travelers with more time than a week can extend this same trip to Pemba instead of flying home, a short domestic hop from ZNZ to a far quieter, far less developed outer island, genuinely worth knowing about even if this particular week doesn’t include it.

Is 7 days enough time in Zanzibar?

Yes, and it’s genuinely a complete first trip, not a compromise. Seven days covers Stone Town’s real sights, a spice tour, both of the island’s headline day trips (Mnemba’s reef and Jozani’s red colobus), and two different beach coasts instead of just one. Trying to add a third region or Pemba on top of all that is what actually starts to feel rushed.

Should a first 7-day trip add a second coast, or stick to one beach?

Adding the second coast, as this itinerary does, is the stronger first-timer pick specifically because a week is long enough to feel the contrast: Nungwi or Kendwa’s swim-anytime water against Paje’s tide-timed kitesurfing coast. Is Pemba worth adding instead of a second Unguja coast?

Only if quiet and diving matter more than variety. Pemba is a genuinely different, far less developed island reached by a short domestic flight or a longer ferry from Unguja, worth it on a trip beyond a week, but swapping it in here means dropping either the north or the east coast above, not adding a third region on top of them.

What else to know for a 7-day Zanzibar trip

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, not its own country, and the currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS), though USD works for hotels, tours and entry fees if your bills are small and reasonably new. It’s roughly 99% Muslim, so cover shoulders and knees the moment you leave Stone Town’s beach strip or either coast’s resort grounds, ordinary daywear covers the sights above.
