Day 1: Land, Get Settled Near Centraal

Day 2: Rotterdam, Skyline and Markthal

  • Markthal , the horseshoe-shaped food hall with a painted ceiling, is the anchor stop; the tilted Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) and the Erasmusbrug, nicknamed the Swan, round out a walkable loop from Centraal.
  • Rotterdam was rebuilt almost entirely after WWII bombing, so treat it as a skyline-and-architecture day rather than an old-town stroll, that’s what Amsterdam itself is for.
  • Back in Amsterdam by evening for a relaxed dinner.

Day 3: Utrecht, Canals and a Locked Tower

  • Ride the NS Intercity from Centraal to Utrecht Centraal, 26-28 minutes, roughly EUR 10 one-way, over 100 direct trains a day.
  • The Dom Tower , 465 steps and the tallest church tower in the country, only admits visitors on a guided climb, EUR 12 adult, EUR 7 ages 4-12, book ahead since weekend slots fill.
  • Walk the werfkelders, Utrecht’s unique two-level canal wharves with restaurants sitting right at the water, a layout no other Dutch city has.
  • Back in Amsterdam by evening, tomorrow starts with a longer train ride.

Day 4: The Hague and Delft, One Day, Two Cities

  • Ride the NS train direct from Centraal to The Hague, about 50-52 minutes, roughly EUR 15.30-15.70 one-way.
  • The Mauritshuis , EUR 21 adult, free under 19, holds Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring; the Binnenhof government complex is a short walk away.
  • Hop the local train onward to Delft, only 7-14 minutes and EUR 2.80-3.30, small enough for an afternoon of canals and the Royal Delft porcelain factory, roughly EUR 19-20 entry.
  • Head back to Amsterdam by evening, this is genuinely a full but manageable two-city day.

Day 5: Giethoorn, the Long Day Out

  • No direct train exists, ride NS to Zwolle or Steenwijk then catch bus line 70, roughly once or twice an hour, for a total of 2-2.5 hours each way, about EUR 58 round trip.
  • Punt boats and “whisper boats” replace cars in the village center, this is the closest thing to Amsterdam’s canals without a single bike bell.
  • Check bus 70’s return schedule before you set out, a missed connection costs you the rest of the day, not just an hour.
  • Head back to Amsterdam by late evening, tomorrow is the longest single train ride of the whole trip.

Day 6: Maastricht, Worth the Overnight

  • Ride a direct NS Intercity from Centraal to Maastricht, about 2 hours 22 minutes, roughly EUR 33 one-way, packing light matters more today than any other.
  • Vrijthof square anchors the old center, flanked by the Basilica of St. Servatius and St. John’s Church; the Bonnefanten Museum, designed by Aldo Rossi, pairs medieval and contemporary art.
  • Stop at Boekhandel Dominicanen, a 13th-century Dominican church converted into a bookstore, worth the detour on its own.
  • Stay overnight in Maastricht rather than rushing the return, the 2h22 ride makes a same-day round trip a genuinely bad use of the day.
  • Head back to Amsterdam the next morning on the same direct Intercity before your flight, this is the one day of the trip that ends outside the city.

Is Maastricht worth a 2 hour 22 minute train each way? Only as an overnight, not a day trip, the transit-to-time-on-the-ground ratio is too steep otherwise. Stay the night and the math works, Vrijthof, the Bonnefanten, and Boekhandel Dominicanen genuinely reward a relaxed evening and morning rather than a rushed afternoon.

Should The Hague and Delft be done as one day or two? One, comfortably. The Hague-to-Delft hop is only 7-14 minutes, and neither city needs more than half a day on its own, splitting them across two days just adds an extra Centraal departure for no real gain.
