2 Days in Dubai: First-Timer Plan

Travel advisory: Dubai and the wider UAE were caught up in the 2026 regional conflict with Iran. During a roughly six-week phase in early 2026, Iranian drones and missiles struck sites in the UAE, including near Dubai’s airport and port and a hotel on Palm Jumeirah. A ceasefire has held since April, and Dubai’s flights, hotels, and attractions are operating and recovering, though the situation stays fluid (the current risk is mainly to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, not the city). The US State Department has the UAE at “Reconsider Travel” and the UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but both flag the regional situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, and again before you fly. Everything below is written for a normal visit, for when it’s calm.

Two days is enough for the Dubai highlights if you don’t try to add a beach afternoon on top: Downtown and the skyline on day one, Old Dubai and a desert evening on day two. Book these before you go

Day 1: Downtown and the skyline

Morning

Start at the Burj Khalifa (Level 124/125, roughly AED 149-250; book a timed slot in advance, since walk-up prices run higher). Give it 60-90 minutes including the elevator queue.

Afternoon

Cross into The Dubai Mall, free to enter, for lunch and a look at the Dubai Aquarium (around AED 120) if tanks interest you more than shops.

Evening

Watch the free Dubai Fountain show at the base of the tower (check current showtimes before you plan your evening around a specific slot), then head out for a desert safari (roughly AED 99-350), the easiest way to fit dune bashing and a Bedouin-camp dinner into a short trip.

Day 2: Old Dubai and a Palm or Marina afternoon

Morning

Cross to Al Fahidi Historical District for the wind-tower courtyard houses, then take the abra water-taxi (about AED 1) across Dubai Creek to Deira for the Gold Souk and Spice Souk. The Dubai Museum inside Al Fahidi Fort has been closed since around January 2026 for restoration, so skip it for now rather than planning around it.

Afternoon

Choose one: the monorail out to Palm Jumeirah for The View at The Palm and a look at Atlantis, or Dubai Marina/JBR for a walk along the 1.7km public beach.

Evening

Dinner at Ravi in Satwa (Pakistani, open since 1978, cash-friendly) or Arabian Tea House in Al Fahidi for an Emirati menu in a courtyard setting.

Getting around and where to stay

Base yourself in Downtown to keep day one entirely walkable; the Metro’s Red Line connects Downtown to both the Marina and Deira within about 20-30 minutes. Uber, Careem, and metered taxis all work as backups for the abra crossing and desert safari pickup.

One concrete tip: book the Burj Khalifa slot and the desert safari before you land, not on arrival. Both are the two bookings most likely to be full on a two-day trip if you leave them for the day you actually want to go.
