3 Days in Dubai: First-Timer Plan

Travel advisory: Dubai and the wider UAE were caught up in the 2026 regional conflict with Iran. During a roughly six-week phase in early 2026, Iranian drones and missiles struck sites in the UAE, including near Dubai’s airport and port and a hotel on Palm Jumeirah. A ceasefire has held since April, and Dubai’s flights, hotels, and attractions are operating and recovering, though the situation stays fluid (the current risk is mainly to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, not the city). The US State Department has the UAE at “Reconsider Travel” and the UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but both flag the regional situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, and again before you fly. Everything below is written for a normal visit, for when it’s calm.

Three days covers Downtown, Old Dubai, and Palm Jumeirah without cramming, and is the version most first-timers should book. Short on time? Drop day three and use the 2-day plan instead. Book these before you go

Day 1: Downtown and the skyline

Morning

Burj Khalifa (Level 124/125, roughly AED 149-250, book ahead) for the views, then a wander through The Dubai Mall, free to enter.

Afternoon

Stay in the mall for the Dubai Aquarium (around AED 120) or a longer shopping stop.

Evening

Watch the free Dubai Fountain show at the tower’s base (check current showtimes), then dinner at Arabian Tea House in Al Fahidi if you want to ease into Old Dubai the night before day two.

Day 2: Old Dubai and the desert

Morning

Al Fahidi Historical District for the wind-tower houses, then the abra water-taxi (about AED 1) across Dubai Creek to Deira for the Gold Souk and Spice Souk. The Dubai Museum inside Al Fahidi Fort has been closed since around January 2026 for restoration, so plan around it rather than for it.

Afternoon

Lunch at Ravi in Satwa (Pakistani, open since 1978, cash-friendly), then rest before the evening.

Evening

A desert safari (roughly AED 99-350): dune bashing, a camel ride, and a Bedouin-camp dinner with shows.

Day 3: Palm Jumeirah

Morning

Take the Palm Monorail out to Palm Jumeirah. Ride The View at The Palm for the overview, or head straight to Atlantis The Palm if the Aquaventure waterpark (roughly AED 300-350, free for Atlantis hotel guests) is on the list.

Afternoon

Beach time at Palm Jumeirah, or backtrack to Dubai Marina/JBR for the 1.7km public beach and a broader choice of lunch spots.

Evening

A last dinner in DIFC or back in Downtown; check if Ain Dubai, the observation wheel near Bluewaters, is running before adding it, since it has had a volatile operating history.

Getting around and where to stay

Base in Downtown for day one and three; the Metro Red Line covers the Marina/JBR side, and the Palm Monorail is a separate ticketed connection from the mainland tram. Uber, Careem, and metered taxis fill the gaps, especially for the desert safari pickup and return.

One concrete tip: book the Burj Khalifa and desert safari slots before you land. On a three-day trip, losing a morning to a walk-up queue for either one costs you a meaningful share of the whole itinerary.
