2 Days: Honolulu Beyond Waikiki

Day 1: The North Shore

Morning

Forty-five to sixty minutes north of Waikiki, the North Shore runs on a completely different clock than the resort strip. Winter, roughly October through April, brings the big-wave season that shuts Waimea Bay to swimming; summer flips it flat and calm. Start in Haleiwa town for surf shops and the Matsumoto’s-versus-Aoki’s shave ice rivalry, five to eight dollars either way.

Afternoon

Drive the strip toward Kahuku, stopping at whichever beach matches the season, Waimea Bay for summer swimming, a safe distance back from the sand at the Banzai Pipeline in winter to watch instead. Reef-safe sunscreen is required by state law here, and posted warning flags exist because the shorebreak genuinely hurts people most years.

Evening

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck has run the same Kahuku spot since 1993, plate roughly $14-17, cash-friendly, expect a line. Eat there or at one of the newer trucks nearby, then drive back to Waikiki for the night.

Day 2: Kailua and Lanikai

Morning

Thirty to forty minutes east of Waikiki on the windward coast , park at Kailua Beach Park rather than trying to find sand-side parking at Lanikai itself, there isn’t any. TheBus route 671 also runs this route if you skipped the rental car for day one.

Afternoon

Walk or bike the 10 to 15 minutes from Kailua Beach Park to Lanikai Beach. The water here beats Waikiki’s on the one thing that matters, actual swimming conditions, calm and clear most of the year. Weekend street parking in the Lanikai neighborhood is banned outright, so don’t plan on driving up to the sand.

Evening

Kailua town has its own restaurant strip, a genuine break from Waikiki’s hotel dining. Head back to Waikiki after dinner, or extend the day with a sunset walk along Kailua Beach before the drive.

Is Two Days Enough for the North Shore and Kailua?

Enough for a real taste, not enough to slow down. Each day is a there-and-back trip of 6 to 8 hours including the beach time itself, so two days covers exactly one North Shore visit and one Kailua visit with no room for a repeat or a third stop like Nuuanu Pali. Three days fixes that.

Do You Need a Car for Both Days?

Technically no, TheBus route 671 reaches Kailua and other routes reach the North Shore, but the schedules run long and infrequent enough that a rental car pays for itself against two lost hours of beach time. Compare rental cars in Honolulu before you land if two solid beach days is the whole point of the trip.

Pack reef-safe sunscreen before you leave home. Hawaii’s mineral-only rule is enforced by law, and the gas-station brands sold near Waikiki aren’t always compliant.
