Day 1: The North Shore

Morning

Forty-five to sixty minutes north, the North Shore switches seasons hard: big-wave winter (roughly October through April) closes swimming at Waimea Bay, summer flattens it out. Haleiwa town covers surf shops and the Matsumoto’s-versus-Aoki’s shave ice rivalry.

Afternoon

Move up toward Kahuku, picking a beach for the season rather than the map. Reef-safe sunscreen is required by law, and the warning flags at Waimea Bay and Sandy Beach mark real, not theoretical, shorebreak danger.

Evening

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, running since 1993, plate roughly $14-17, cash-friendly, expect a line. Back to Waikiki after.

Day 2: Kailua and Lanikai

Morning

Thirty to forty minutes east on the windward coast , park at Kailua Beach Park, Lanikai itself has no parking or restrooms of its own.

Afternoon

Walk or bike 10 to 15 minutes to Lanikai Beach for the better swim of the two Oahu beach days. Weekend street parking in the Lanikai neighborhood is banned.

Evening

Dinner in Kailua town, then back to Waikiki.

Day 3: Nuuanu Pali Lookout and Kualoa Ranch

Morning

Twenty minutes out, the Nuuanu Pali Lookout marks a decisive 1795 battle site, $7 non-resident parking, genuinely windy.

Afternoon

Continue to Kualoa Ranch , the Jurassic Park and Lost filming valley, 35 to 45 minutes further. Single-activity tours run around $58, half or full-day packages $120-190. Byodo-In Temple sits nearby as a quieter option.

Evening

Back to Waikiki for the night, three solid day trips down.

Day 4: The Circle Island Drive

Morning

Start early and go counterclockwise, windward side first, to dodge Honolulu’s morning traffic. The road doesn’t fully circle the island, it dead-ends on both sides of Kaena Point, so this is a partial loop even at its most ambitious.

Afternoon

Loop through the North Shore stretch you already saw on day one, then cut back through central Oahu. Total driving plus stops runs 8 to 12 hours, a genuinely full day.

Evening

Back to Waikiki by dinner if you kept the stops tight, later if you lingered at any one beach.

Is the Circle Island Drive Worth It After Already Seeing the North Shore?

Yes, because the value is in the loop itself, not any single new stop. Central Oahu’s plantation towns and the windward coast’s less-visited stretches fill in the gaps between the North Shore and Kailua days, and doing it as one continuous drive shows how the island actually connects, something the piecemeal day-trip version doesn’t.

How Much Does a Rental Car Actually Cost for Four Days?

Roughly $160-240 in base rate at $40-60 a day, plus Hawaii’s $7.50 daily vehicle surcharge and about 4.7% general excise tax stacked on top, so budget closer to $220-280 all in for the four days. Compare rates in Honolulu before landing rather than at the counter, prices swing hard by season.

Fill the tank the night before day four. Circle island day has the longest stretches without a gas station of any day in this itinerary.
