5 Days: Honolulu Beyond Waikiki

Day 1: The North Shore

Morning

Forty-five to sixty minutes north, on the North Shore , big-wave winter (roughly October through April) shuts down swimming at Waimea Bay; summer flips it calm. Haleiwa town covers surf shops and the Matsumoto’s-versus-Aoki’s shave ice rivalry.

Afternoon

Move toward Kahuku, matching the beach to the season. Reef-safe sunscreen is a legal requirement, and the flags at Waimea Bay and Sandy Beach mark real shorebreak danger, not brochure caution.

Evening

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, running since 1993, plate roughly $14-17, cash-friendly. Back to Waikiki.

Day 2: Kailua and Lanikai

Morning

Thirty to forty minutes east on the windward coast , park at Kailua Beach Park, Lanikai has no parking of its own.

Afternoon

Walk or bike 10 to 15 minutes to Lanikai for the better swim. Weekend street parking in the neighborhood is banned.

Evening

Dinner in Kailua town, then back to Waikiki.

Day 3: Nuuanu Pali Lookout and Kualoa Ranch

Morning

Twenty minutes out, the Nuuanu Pali Lookout marks a 1795 battle site, $7 non-resident parking.

Afternoon

Continue to Kualoa Ranch , 35 to 45 minutes further, single-activity tours around $58, half or full-day packages $120-190.

Evening

Back to Waikiki.

Day 4: The Circle Island Drive

Morning

Go counterclockwise, windward first, to dodge morning traffic. The route dead-ends on both sides of Kaena Point, so it’s a partial loop by design.

Afternoon

Loop back through the North Shore and central Oahu. Budget 8 to 12 hours total.

Evening

Back to Waikiki, four full day trips behind you.

Day 5: North Shore Again, Surf Lesson and Shark’s Cove

Morning

Back up to the North Shore, this time with a surf lesson booked through one of Haleiwa’s shops if conditions are calm enough for beginners, summer months are the safer bet for that.

Afternoon

Shark’s Cove, a free public snorkel spot on the North Shore, is the day’s other stop. Summer’s flat water makes it swimmable; skip it entirely in winter big-wave conditions.

Evening

One last shrimp truck stop or a sit-down dinner in Haleiwa before the drive back to Waikiki.

Is a Second North Shore Day Overkill?

Not if day one was mostly driving and eating. A second visit built around a surf lesson and Shark’s Cove turns the North Shore from a scenic drive-through into an actual activity day, and the two visits genuinely don’t overlap much once you add water time.

Should You Book a Guided Snorkel Trip Instead of Driving to Shark’s Cove?

Only if you’d rather have gear and safety guidance included. Shark’s Cove itself is free and public, so a guided trip mostly buys convenience and equipment, not access. Book an Oahu snorkel tour if you’re not confident reading conditions yourself.
